Nice alternative
Ryobi 1/2” barrel mandrel and 240 grit sanding bands(10 count) for Rotary tools. I have used Dremel on and off since they were first introduced. Lately I use the sanding bands to sand and smooth out edges of some of my leather work pieces. I also use them to shape and sand wooden molds I use for forming leather. Up until now I relied on the Dremel brand for the fittings. I found Ryobi makes the sanding bands in the various grits and the drum mandrel that are compatible with my Dremel tool, Fordum tools and any other brand of this type of tool. I decided on a non-scientific side by side comparison. I am using a corded 4000+ series rotary tool with the flex shaft attachment. I fitted the dremel and the Ryobi and sanded the same wood mold in the same distance around one of my molds. One long side & one short side each. I used the same grit on the dremel as I did for the Ryobi. I know, almost sounds scientific! ‘The square root of the quotient variable…’ LOL. There are some differences on the drum mandrel, ie: finish etc, but not enough to make much of a difference. Both packages have the same number of sanding bands in identical grit. Both appeared to have identical wear and both resulted in good sanding on the wood. Of course, when you place the sanding pad on the mandrel, be sure they are directionally installed so you do not unravel the bands and cause damage to your work piece or injury to yourself. Also, seat the mandrel all the way into the rotary tool being used. Leaving the mandrel or any other fitting extended will cause the post to bend, some sooner than later. Ask me how I know. ;( One omission in the Ryobi packaging was the above information about installation. All in all, the differences between the two are not going to be noticeable. I will recommend the Ryobi version as a good set to use for your rotary tool. Also, Ryobi has a large selection of rotary tools that I have not had a chance to try. I have noticed that dremel now sells the sanding pads in packages of 6 and Ryobi in packages of 10.

Perfect for fine detail work
When fine detail work is need, RYOBI rotary bands are the perfect choice. I particularly like the 240 grit bands as they will work on all surfaces, wood, epoxy resin, aluminum, steel, fiberglass, plastic, etc. As you will see in the photos, I use my tool on several different type of materials. The Ryobi bands work best for me when used at moderate to low speed, this keeps from grinding off the abrasive to soon. Since the abrasive is medium grit -240- it will not clog very fast, again if used at moderate speed. I also like to put the band out past the end about 1/16", keep from rubbing the rubber expansion. Most excellent product.
