How do I know where to drill the new hole in the door fram for the new deadbolt?

I installed it on an existing door so there is no hole in the frame for the deadbolt. I do not want to mess it up.
Asked by: Chris
Grab an old tube of the wife's lipstick and coat the end of the installed deadbolt lock. Close the door and then extend it like your trying to lock it, till it hits the jamb. Retract the lock, open the door, and you should get a pretty good mark where it strikes.

Will this work on a 2 1/2 inch thick door?
Asked by: giantelf
My door was only 1 7/8 inches thick...but the directions recommend that you drill from each side...so I would think you could do it. I think we could techinically have drilled all the way through from one side, but we did realign and go in from each side to be safe.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Lines up holes well, hole saws are meh The alignment tool was great for a home gamer like me who had never drilled out a door before. For that alone, it was worth buying it. However, the 2 1/8" hole saw is really shallow. I had a thin door (shortest setting on the guide) and the hole saw bottomed out before getting through. I had to flip the door and go in from the other side to finish. The teeth on the hole saw (both of them) clogged really quickly and I had to stop and clean the teeth a couple of times. If you don't plan to drill many doors, then I think it's well worth the cost. If you do, though, then invest in separate, good quality hole saws.

I especially like the "alignment tool" to ensure the latch matches up with the strike perfectly. I did not use the screws to hold this on the door, just got it lined up, started drilling until the hole was started and then set the tool off to the side and finished drilling freehand. The only improvement I would like to see is for there to be a way to remove the hole saw bit from the drill bit easier. After drilling it is on tight and the big hole saw doesnt have any notches to use a crescent wrench or pliers on. Other than that this works great. Ignore the negative reviews!

I just purchased it from HD to add a deadbolt to our garage entry door into the house. It works pretty well, but it has some drawbacks to note. First, the it tore the veneer on the front of the solid core door. This is likely due to having to press with the drill to get the hole saw through the door. It does it get stuck. Pressing also causing burning/scorching and can generate quite a bit of smoke (if not, fire) so be careful of that. Second, I would recommend using a corded drill or drill hammer. A cordless drill (useless you have a professional grade drill) will not get through. This would also cut down on having to press. Third, I would also recommend screwing the door kit in, using the screw guides on the front. It will hold it firm while drilling. Other than that, it did what it is meant to do.

When using to make an existing hole larger...please read so you can avoid multiple trips to home depot for more products. We purchased a home and obvioulsy needed to change the locks. The existing door had a deadbolt with a hole that was no longer considered a standard size and needed to be larger. In doing research we found this tool and thought it would work great. Because there was already and existing hole we were not able to use the drill bit as a pilot guide. We tried to use it and just go slow but it ripped the guide off the door. We had to purchase a hole saw the size of the existing hole and nest the hole saws so that we could easily drill the new hole. Mainly want to recommend nesting the hole saws if you are making a larger hole than you previously have. Do not do what we did and decide to try without something to fit exactly inside the existing hole. This would have been so much easier if we were drilling a brand new hole!

Rated 2 out of 5 by from Wood, maybe, metal NO WAY It sorta worked? The jig is nice to get the holes in the correct place but the hole saw is junk. Didn't get through my exterior door, it did cut through wood, with a lot of effort. Not worth the money in my opinion....
