Questions & Answers

How do this connectors work?

Meaning the sharkbite type.
Asked by: Rene
Inside the fitting there is a set of teeth that face towards the inside of the fitting. When you insert the pipe into the fitting it slides into two o-rings and the teeth grab the pipe so that it cannot pull out. There is a special tool used to release the teeth so it can be taken off.

should i use pipe dope or tape on the threaded end?

should i use pipe dope or tape on the threaded end?
Asked by: whoaghi
For gas and water lines I always use Teflon tape first ( 3 wraps ) then use pipe dope on all my fittings, On gas lines where you have a machined gas fitting never use any sealant. These tapered fittings are to be connected dry. I used these hoses to hook up my water heater to eliminate 3 elbows and omit more cutting and soldering. Put them on 6 months ago and no leaks. I wanted to wait this long to post a review. Shark bites worked as described.

You will need a Sharkbite release tool. Home Depot stocks them. Instructions are included with the tool. Relatively inexpensive and easy to use. Just use a little penetrant ahead of time to help break it loose.

3/4 in. Push-to-Connect x 3/4 in. FIP x 15 in. Braided Stainless Steel Water Heater Connector is rated 4.8 out of 5 by 391.
Rated 3 out of 5 by from Works, then you get black rubber pieces in tub. Easy to install, worked for a couple years. Then gf tried to take a bath and a bunch of black rubber stuff came out of the faucet, then all the other faucets with the hot water side. Traced it back to the shark bite connection from hot water heater. Replaced with 2 corrugated steel lines, but I replaced the black rubber washer with 2 red ones (supposedly for high water temps, as the Home Depot Employee stated). First time over tightened and blew out the 2 washers, replaced and didn't tighten down as much and seems to be leak free.

They slide on really tight and snug. Make sure there aren't any burs on the end of the pipe that you're connecting them to. And remember that once you've made the connection, you can only get it off with the special Sharkbite removal tool (only a couple of bucks to purchase). Wish these came in sizes longer than 24", but I understand that the corrugated steel probably can't hold up pressure-wise if they are too much longer than that.

When I got home with these, I found the connection to my new water softener was 1", not 3/4". Called a plumber... and guess what this professional used to adapt from my 3/4" plumbing to the needed 1" pipes? SHARKBITE connectors! So *there* is your review of SharkBites! They make more than just great flex connectors: They make great size-adapter/couplers, too!

This is by far the best way to install the cold water inlet to a hot water heater. Just cut off the inlet copper clean it up with a little sand paper and push the end of the braided SS connector on the pipe, the other end simply connects to the inlet nipple of the hot water heater. The outlet is done the same way using a half inch 1/2 in. Push-to-Connect x 1/2 in. FIP x 24 in. Braided Stainless Steel Water Heater Connector. John

Easy to tie into existing copper tubing without special preparations,... and there are no leaks! Flexible hose makes connecting existing pipe to new water heater connections in slightly different locations a breeze. This connector exceeded my expectations because I didn't know there was a product that would make my project simpler.

I used two of them to install my new water heater and they worked like a charm. Applied a little thread sealant to the end that attached to the water heater and just pushed the other end on to the PVC pipe and that's it.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from deteriorating water heater supply line I used a shark bite supply line when I replaced my water heater. About 3 and 1/2 years later we had black specs filling our tub. Replaced the line with another one and now about 3 and 1/2 years later we have black specks in our tub again. [This review was collected as part of a promotion.]
