Alignment of holes to attach base to post

Asked by Kplantern November 22, 2020

Answers

Yes, just be sure to line up the two center holes on each side and start the nail or screw before fastening the outer holes.

How are these adjusted

Asked by Gene November 11, 2020

Answer

The only adjustment is the slot for the anchor bolt. A 1/2" anchor is recommended and the slot will give you about up to 3/4" of adjustment in only one direction. You need to be accurate if you are placing the anchor bolts in wet concrete. Depending on your project you may be able to drill into cured concrete and use "Red Head" expansion anchors.

your probably safe but make sure you use wider washers to make up for the difference of the diameter of the smaller bolt. there should be bolts with a larger diameter even at home depot. check further but overall you"ll be safe,

6x6 cedar post are 1/4” too wide for the Simpson standoff base, can it be trimmed down? Simpson states don’t bend them.

Asked by Hardhead October 1, 2020

to add to the comment below, it sounds like you have rough cut 6x6 (6") , rather than a 'dressed' version (5.5"). In future you could special order the ABA66RZ which is properly sized for rough cut timber, to avoid cutting.

Can I use this to protect play fort posts That were standing in dirt? How much weight do they hold?

Asked by Mom September 23, 2020

Answers

With the post in the vertical position and a total height of 8' it is estimated to be around 6500 lbs. So the design of this base support exceeds this limitation plus the weight of the post.

Max 1/2" anchor.

Can these be used with an existing deck where the posts were installed directly onto the concrete?

Asked by Phil September 4, 2020

Answer

Don't see why not. The posts will need to be cut shorter, but i don't remember how much. If the post have been embedded in the concrete, that is a different story.

Can these be used for fence post uprights?

Asked by Chris August 29, 2020

They are really meant to set on concrete slab to get the post off the wet slab when it rains so it doesn’t rot - like the posts on a front porch. That’s where I used them. If you use quick set concrete and brace the post while it sets you should not need these on a fence

The bracket securely holds a 6 x 6 post about 1" above the concrete support pier. This will extend the life of the wood post by holding it out of contact with the concrete and any water accumulation. In my area, municipal inspectors are requiring this method of post installation as opposed to a buried and set in concrete installation. I recently had to retrofit 3 posts that had rotted at ground level due to that method of installation 20 years ago.
