About This Product

The TN Ostrich Fern, a glade fern, produces stately fronds which grow upright and are vase-shaped. Ferns make for nice back ground in the garden to create a woodland setting. Although it prefers shade it will grow in full sun as well. Its non-flowering, and at its most beautiful in spring when the fronds start to unfurl. Very low maintenance, just take care at time of planting. It will multiply quickly by rhizomes to form colonies. Deer resistant. How tall does this get in partial shade?

            Answer This Question

It's supposed to get around 3 ft. I've had one before and it was about 3 - 4 ft in partial shade.

            By|May 13, 2020

Mine are in full shade and they are about 18" tall. I live in South East Texas and I can not put them in the sun -- too hot during summer. But in full shade and with regular water they have survived. During August and September -- our hottest months at 100 plus temperatures -- they get some burn at the tips of the fronds but once the temperature starts to cool off in October they bounce back and start growing new fronds. They have not died back this year because we have had a mild winter.

Is this an edible variety (Fiddleheads)

                  Answer This Question

No, it's not. They call it TN Ostrich Fern which is misleading. The bontanical name for this species is Athyrium Pycnocarpon, while the edible variety is called Matteuccia Struthiopteris.

                    (5)

Google Matteuccia struthiopteris. That should return results for the information I believe you're looking for.

                      (2)

Ostrich fern fiddleheads are supposed to be edible, but should be cooked first.

                        Total Garbage
Total rip off. Received 4 dried out roots and planted immediately. Weeks later nothing grew. Roots actually dissolved into the soil and disappeared. I should have returned them as soon as I opened the package. I knew they were dead and would not grow. Only buy plants that are actually growing. i should have returned

After 3 weeks only 3 out of 9 are sprouting. There wasn't any planting instructions. I'm concerned I may have planted too deep. I've been watering daily but not over watering.

I’m disappointing. I ordered 12 plants and planted them the day I received them. Watered daily and babied them. Only 3 of the 12 plants sprouted.

Poor health or near death upon arrival
I’m disappointed . I’m not sure I received Otrich Fern Ryzomes . I planted them last year and struggled to sprout under pristine conditions. This year I have 3 out of 6 sprouting but purchased more Otrich Fern Ryzomes from a different supplier and the health of the new supplier was completely different . The root was bursting with fiddle heads . I am suspecting my Ryzomes wete of very poor health or near death and dry in comparison to the ones I just received.
