The TN Ostrich Fern, a glade fern, produces stately fronds which grow upright and are vase-shaped. Ferns make for nice back ground in the garden to create a woodland setting. Although it prefers shade it will grow in full sun as well. Its non-flowering, and at its most beautiful in spring when the fronds start to unfurl. Very low maintenance, just take care at time of planting. It will multiply quickly by rhizomes to form colonies. Deer resistant. Excellent selection for wet areas along ponds, streams, water gardens or in bogs. Also grows well in shaded borders, woodland gardens, wild gardens or native plant gardens.

Q:How tall does this get in partial shade?

        Answer This Question

A:  It's supposed to get around 3 ft. I've had one before and it was about 3 - 4 ft in partial shade.

        by|May 13, 2020

A:  Mine are in full shade and they are about 18" tall. I live in South East Texas and I can not put them in the sun -- too hot during summer. But in full shade and with regular water they have survived. During August and September -- our hottest months at 100 plus temperatures -- they get some burn at the tips of the fronds but once the temperature starts to cool off in October they bounce back and start growing new fronds. They have not died back this year because we have had a mild winter.

Q:Is this an edible variety (Fiddleheads)

          Answer This Question

A:  No, it's not. They call it TN Ostrich Fern which is misleading. The bontanical name for this species is Athyrium Pycnocarpon, while the edible variety is called Matteuccia Struthiopteris.

A:  Google Matteuccia struthiopteris. That should return results for the information I believe you're looking for.

A:  Ostrich fern fiddleheads are supposed to be edible, but should be cooked first.

Purchased two sets of three each, and so far I have 5 (maybe) 6 hits. Stick with these; they will grow if properly cared for.

Nervous shopper, jury is not in yet
It’s a lot of money for very small bare root plants…. They’re in the ground and let’s see. I’m not impressed with the quality of these products. I really expected some substantial bare root balls, but it looked more like the scrapings at the bottom of a bucket.
