I recently built a small aquaponics set up and needed grow media to get it going. This wasn't the cheapest I found but the free shipping made up the difference. I'm currently growing a mesclun blend and sowed directly in the clay pebbles. So far it's working great - nothing to dislike about it. I would definitely recommend.

Not for Hydroponics!
If you're looking for a grow media for a flood and drain hydroponics/aquaponics system keep looking. 99.9% of these chinese pellets float. I bought three 50L bags and there were only about a dozen pellets that sank. I tried power washing them, soaking them for a week, vinegar/peroxide baths you name it. Make sure you keep your receipts as you'll be returning because of frustration.

great product for gardening
Grow rock provides the best drainage for growing chili peppers. My 4x7ft container pepper garden already has over a bushel of growing peppers. Home Depot has the best gardening supplies in town.

As Expected
This stuff was what it should be & for a reasonable price. I used 200 Lbs which filled one Aquaponics bed. I have two others to do and will use this again. Compared to other product prices this was the best I could find for the amount ordered & it was delivered quickly by UPS & no shipping charge. It does need to be rinsed before using but that was easy after developing a decent method.

Fast delivery, clean and ready to use
Best price and as described. This is the first time I've used this product and it appears to be better than using rock wool or coco fiber.

Cons- Very dirty compared to Hydroton or Aqua Crunch. Almost impossible to rinse clean and it WILL foul an aquaponics system. (Just be prepared to drain and clean your tanks no matter how much you pre-rinse.). Uneven shapes and lots of broken pieces/chips) Pros- A little more dense than Hydroton and Aqua Crunch so it doesn't float as much initially in a flood and drain system. Currently less expensive than Hydroton. (But not Aqua Crunch) Overall, Viastone is ok but not my number 1 pick for aquaculture grow media.

Im using this product on an aquaponics setup. Some notes:I really wish the product came washed, especially considering cost. Some of the material is smaller than advertised range, so consider that this can clog your systems if not designed properly. I myself had to redo the media guards.

Disappointed with this! The description said that these would NOT float like other expanded clay pellets which is why I chose them over other brands. They have been Floating in my hydroponics bed for a month now with no sign of sinking. Hodro Crunch from Amazon is better for the same price

Shipping was very fast, however the product is of very poor quality. I use it to grow orchids. It's very dusty compares to other brands of similar products, sizes are not uniform, and there are many broken tiny pieces that will clog your drain. Too much labor and time wasted washing it. It seems to dry out faster than other similar products. And it's very ugly looking, irregular shapes and gray mudy color. Sorry, I would have not cared about how it looks if it doesn't have all the other disadvantages. All in all I tried so hard to like it but couldn't find one thing that I like about except the fast shipping. I rarely write reviews, but this product is so disappointing, and you cannot return it because of general dissatisfaction about the product. Never buy again.

Equivalent to hydroton and cheaper. Buy it once use it forever. Using for hydroponics and aquaponics projects. Way better than lava or river rock and none of the inhalation hazards that you get with perlite.

As described. Needs to be cleaned and size isn't uniform but those are both normal issues for these large bags of expanded clay.
