Q:Can I add Varathane Early American Classic Wood Interior Stain to natural Watco Danish oil and use this mixture for several coats on oak wood, or would the different drying times cause a problem?

    Answer This Question

A:  We appreciate your interest. Due to the variations in formulas, we do not recommend mixing Rust-Oleum Watco Danish Oil with any of our Varathane products or different Watco products. Instead, we recommend mixing together different colors of the Watco Danish Oil. This will ensure proper drying and performance. - Rust-Oleum Product Support 3

Q:Will this yellow wood over time or with repeated applications?

      Answer This Question

A:  Great question. The Rust-Oleum Watco Danish Oil does have an amber glow that will deepen over time and/or with additional coats. If you are looking for an exterior clear polyurethane that does not yellow, consider using the Rust-Oleum Varathane Ultimate Spar Urethane Water Based. https://www.homedepot.com/p/Varathane-1-qt-Clear-Satin-Water-Based-Outdoor-Spar-Urethane-2-Pack-250241H/202057149 If you have additional needs, please feel free to call us at (800) 373-6333 - Rust-Oleum Product Support 11

Beautiful finish on kiln dried walnut
I used this on some walnut pieces that I fashioned as end pieces for a keyboard. My final sand was using 400. I spent a few hours sanding, orbital w 120 to shape edges and smooth surfaces, then 220 by hand with grain and 400 by hand with grain. I followed instructions and did two applications. The finish is beautiful and very natural looking. The oil helps bring out the features of the grain and catch the eye. I am very satisfied.

Good stain. Initially I thought it would be closer to a clear coat but it gave it a more vibrant look. Overall it came out really nice, went on really easy.

I just really like working with this product. This is my choice when the wood is going to get bumped and dinged. The surface remains flexible. Doesn't crack at the impact point. This smells nice. I use it for a natural waxed look, but drier to the touch. Not tacky. It penetrates the wood and you wipe it off completely, to the point that it feels almost dry to the touch. It dries in a day. Hint: leaving excess oil on the wood is not better. The excess stays gummy. You must reapply oil to re-soften the gum and wipe it back down to that almost dry feeling.

I use watco on about all my wood projects. I like the ease of use, just wipe it on and in a few minutes wipe off the excess. I also like the variety of colors and use med walnut most often. Watco danish oil also smells better to me than other brands.

WATCO Danish Oils generally a natural substitute for heavy, more toxic varnishes and stains. After deciding the nice WATCO Medium Walnut was a bit light on our outdoor enclosure project, we decided to do a 2nd coat with darker WATCO Dark Walnut. Ugh! The Dark Walnut is NOT like the other WATCO Danish Oils! Instead of a light, pleasant odor, it had a heavy smell of varnish. We had a deadline that committed us to using the product. It was VERY dark and odorous on both pine and redwood. Took much longer to dry than other WATCO Danish Oils we've used over the years. When it finally dried, it was shiny (?) and remained a bit sticky. After two days, we finally ended up having to sand it. At that point, we began to wonder if these cans had accidentally been labeled wrong and did not contain Danish Oil but some other wood stain product? Would NOT recommend this WATCO Dark Walnut to anyone!

                Response from Rust-OleumSupportAug 4, 2023
Let's talk about this! To ensure the best results when apply a new application of Rust-Oleum Watco Danish Oil over a previous application, the surface must be burnished as directed. All excess oil must be wiped away after a few minutes to ensure proper drying as well. If the oil is tacky on the surface after the listed dry time, that indicates that excess product was not removed. To help remove that, we recommend wiping the surface down with clean rags and some mineral spirits.
