Questions & Answers

I need a primer for my front porch. The paint is peeling. Do I need to sand it first?

Asked by: Lorene5
Yes always it's better to sand and clean before applying for best results

Is this stain blocking primer? Can it be used iver new plaster?

Asked by: Kristen
yes, I've used it on plaster, joint compound, plaster of paris, and spackling. It took multiple coats to block creosote stains from a chimney and water stains from ice damage that had the wood resins. Nothing beats alcohol based Bin for stain blocking, but, is a hassle to use, particularly overhead.

Can this be used to cover a water stain on the ceiling?

I have two small children and the odor of the shellac based primer has too strong a smell.
Asked by: Chris
I wouldn't bet on 1-2-3 eliminating water stains. The smell of solvent or shellac based primers will dissipate in about an hour with a fan on and air circulating

On back says it dries in 1 hour but 7 days to fully cure. I plan on putting peel n stick tile over this. Do I have to wait a full 7 days before I do this??
Asked by: Frank
It depends on the temperature and humidity levels. It's dry to the touch in an hour. You can apply peel and stick tiles after 24 hours drying as long as the temperature was above 70 degree and humidity was low the entire drying time.

Bulls Eye 1-2-3 5 gal. White Water-Based Interior/Exterior Primer and Sealer is rated 4.5 out of 5 by 991.

I really needed a gray primer to cover a very dark blue but the store didn't have it in stock when I went so I went with white. Use gray to cover dark color! That said, a 2 gallon bucket of this white primer did the trick. It's thin, not thick so don't make the mistake of trying to use heavy coats. It will slide right off. The room: dark blue on one wall. The other walls were yellow over the blue but the paint was coming off in strips. Then I had drywall repair that needed to be sealed. This is a multi use primer. Follow directions and your project will come out the right way. The whole 2 gallons were used in this room. Ceiling to floor and trim. Yes the trim was blue too. It smells bad so ventilate! I saved time and money using the 2 gallon bucket. I highly recommend this sealer/primer for all the issues I stated.

I have used this product faithfully since the mid '90's when I first discovered it, after many fails with other products. I am an artist and do a lot of painted furniture and this has been my go-to primer for all my projects. I used to buy quart size but now I know I can depend on Zinsser's - so I don't hesitate buying gallon sizes - it surely will be used. Thank YOU Zinsser for creating the perfect primer for painting old furniture, priming canvas or priming anything that needs a sealer before the top coats. It doesn't matter if the furniture is laminate, chip board or covered in anything - I just prime it all first in one coat - then the blemishes reveal themselves and I can take care of those spots as needed. (Like when there is grease or sticker residue or something on the surface that shows up after the first coat.) I can then take care of the grease or what have you and recoat again. Thanks again for all you do to ensure our success.

I shot 10 gallons (2 coats) of Bulls Eye 123 as the drywall sealer/primer. This is good stuff!!! I used a Graco 515 tip and almost full pressure. I really had to move pretty fast with it. If you don't, you can get runs (IF it does run, wait till it fully cures before trying to sand em down. Be forewarned...this stuff is tough). Once cured, we did a quick scuff and painted away. Two coats on the ceiling left a pretty high sheen...more than we wanted, so we ended up using a flat ceiling paint to tone it down. All and all, it all came out very nice. I really like this primer even if it's a tad more expensive than some of the others.

From 15 years ago to today, the Zinsser paint has definitely changed to a more watery paint. It used to be so think and nice to apply to a concrete/stucco - not it takes several coats to cover the same area to get the same result. I tried several others as a test: Killz, Zinsser, PPG - all of them were comparable. But in the end, I hope that the Zinsser will give me the same result of painting.

Using 1& 1/4 nap rollers I primed 2x and probably could have gotten away with a "vintage look". Paint went on easy afterwards in 1 coat. Could not have been happier with the product. Client was very very happy with the results. Will absolutely use this again.

I really like sinners 1-2-3 bulls eye primer, it has great coverage and from the first time I used it, that’s all I ever use. I like the fact u can put it on oil based products and easily repaint with a latex paint. Doesn’t have a strong, headache producing smell. Would and have recommended it to ot

Used to cover some dark wood (trim, doors, chair rail) and it did the job. Worked well and easily in the paint sprayer. Have been satisfied and bought the same thing again as I've done more.

For killing stains I find that Zinsser’s B-I-N does a better job, and if your finish coat will be an oil base paint, I’d use an oil base primer to get a smoother finish. Otherwise the 1-2-3 is almost always my default primer.
