Answer This Question
A: The solid drain pipe doesn't require a gravel bed or cover. Slotted or perforated drain pipe is meant to accept and carry away ground water around the pipe run, meaning that you probably want gravel to allow a pathway to the pipe openings.
There are gravel alternatives and enhancements that work well - 'silt sock' mesh sleeves and fabrics allow water pass through but keep solids from entering and mucking up your drain line. Home Depot stocks all versions of the pipe and ground water drainage enhancers. Here's an example of the sock:

A: This is solid pipe, no gravel is needed as it does not have drain holes.

A: It should have gravel underneath it for sure. Gravel on top would depend on location, slope, depth and other factors.

A: I think dirt would be fine if you think you would never have to dig it up again. I'm using gravel around mine just in case I ever need to go back in to relocate the trench for any unforeseen landscaping purposes. That way I would be less likely to damage it than if it is encased in dirt.

A: Unlike dirt, gravel is larger and is not easy to lose or displaced due to ground water runoff. It is often placed under the pipe/tube for support to avoid sacking. You don't need gravel above it.
