Q:Can I walk on this? I see the 250 limit. Mainly I want to use this to get around in attic. Went up in attic the other day and was scared to death. I am 5’3 115lbs but am thinking of the future when I sell the house. Thank you. T.

Answer This Question

A:  I weight 200 lbs and can walk on them, and I have them on 24" on center joists, but they definitely do flex. I keep a large sheet of cardboard (an old shipping box) up in the attic and use it to crawl around.

A:  We are glad you have taken and interest in our product. The 250 lbs rating is for storage. The concern comes with not putting too much weight on the truss system over a long term that may cause it to sag. As long as your truss system is in good condition the panels will uphold a good amount of weight.

A:  Dear Valued Home Depot Customer, We have reached out to the manufacturer and their reply is, "Yes you may walk on the attic deks as long as you have them screwed into place on you joists. Each panel is pretty sturdy."

Q:Do you need to lay 4x4s first before placing these panels down in an insulated attic?

A:  no you do not need to build up in order to lay down Attic Dek. I am assuming you have blown in insulation. You can compress the insulation with little to no impact on the rating.

A:  Thank you for your interest in AtticDek. Yes, screws are included. You should receive 5 screws per panel. A 4-pack should come with 20 screws.

Q:The description says "panel interlock for easy to installation", but from what is depicted and from the installation instructions I do not see how the panels attach to one another. All I see is they sit next to one another and are separately screwed into ceiling joists. Do they have some sort of snap-together tab or places to put a screw through two neighboring panels?

            Answer This Question

A:  There are no tabs or places to screw through two panels. To interlock: two or more things engage with each other by overlapping or by the fitting together of projections and recesses. Our design uses projections and recesses that allow the panels to fit together much like a puzzle and help prevent movement beyond just screwing them into place.

A:  No, each panel has 5 screw holes and each panel is individually screwed to the attic/ceiling joists.

A:  The panels do not attach but lay alongside each other and are separately screwed into the joists. It is an easy installation. They do not snap together. I prefer this so I can stagger the units. I place a few in a row and then place another row about 6 inches apart. The gap is narrow enough to hold my boxes and wide enough so I use fewer units for a cheaper installation. Tip: Install them in the winter-time, or else stay hydrated.

Q:How do these hold up in the heat of Florida in the attic? Will they cook up there?

A:  Great question...the material Attic Dek is made of has a high heat deflection temperature. Your attic would have to reach temps in excess of 200 degrees in order for the product to be affected.

A:  I live in Florida and mine have been installed for over a year, which means the brutal summer heat. I would strongly recommend, to provide moving air in your attic area, that you that you have a ridge vent for your roof.

A:  I have had my tiles in my Florida attic for over a year and they stand up extremely well to the brutal summer heat. BTW, there is no such thing as heat deflection on this product! It is simply a very hard plastic. It works as flooring or as a path to other parts of the attic.

Q:How much weight can it support? I understand it would depend on the frames too, but provided that the frames are sturdy and can take 350lb+ weight, can these too, when installed properly?

A:  SB - I can assure you that each of the units can easily handle 250 pounds...and when added together, with the interlocking sides (see picture), it can only increase the load.

Q:How could a 4-pack of these tiles only cover 10 square feet? I would think the coverage would be at least the same as one sheet of plywood (32sf) otherwise this is too expensive to use.

A:  Thank you for your question, yes we recognize we are not as inexpensive as plywood. Our goal is to provide an easier and faster solution for those who are not able to haul, measure and cut plywood to create storage in the attic.

A:  Well, JM...do the math. Each of these 16 x 24 inch panels is 2.66 square feet. So...4 times 2.66 is? I think you get the point. Another point you are obviously missing is that these 'tiles' mean you don't have to rip 4 x 8 foot plywood and slide them into the attic and then nail...just carry up what you need of these tiles.
