About This Product

Wood screws are designed with aggressive threads to securely grip wood. Commonly used to join two pieces of wood tightly together or to attach hinges, locks, or other hardware to wood. Using a pilot hole slightly smaller than the wood screw diameter is suggested to prevent splitting.

Can these be used for cement board in shower alcoves? I don’t want star head screws, just want regular Philips head and use them to put up cement board for shower tile.

    Answer This Question

Dear Valued Home Depot Customer, We have reached out to the manufacturer and their answer is, "Hi Home Depot Customer, These Everbilt #10 x 1-1/4 in. Zinc Plated Phillips Flat Head Wood Screws are designed for woodworking applications and are intended to securely grip wood. They feature a Phillips drive head and a flat head style. However, these screws are not recommended for use with cement board in shower alcoves. Here's why: * **Material Suitability:** These are wood screws, specifically designed for wood and wood-like materials, not cement board. * **Rust Resistance:** The screws are zinc plated, which provides minimal resistance and is suitable for indoor or dry conditions. Shower alcoves are wet environments, and these screws would not offer adequate corrosion resistance, potentially leading to rust and compromise of the installation. The product is not considered an exterior screw, which further indicates it's not suitable for wet or high-moisture applications. For installing cement board in shower alcoves, it is best to use fasteners specifically designed for that purpose, such as corrosion-resistant cement board screws. AI GENERATED ANSWER. Can there screws be used in drywall with anchors? How much weight do the hold?
              ByJul 4, 2023

              Answer This Question

I don’t think it’s going to work, because it’s not threaded all the way to the head. Usually it’s the phillips pan head screws that are used.

Frustrated I purchased these. Half of them break off. Pretty worthless screws.

22 of 100 screws were not useable. Defective head slots. Any chance I can get 22% of my money back.

Missing several hinge screws around the facility and these fit most of the hinges. Work good for getting doors back in the swing of things…

Went into the store to look for wood screws for a project. An employee recommended these screws for my job. 3 out of 32 snapped off at the head. If you can't trust HD to sell you screws what is the point to the store?

                        Screws Brake Off
Would not recommend. Screws brake off when attaching wood to wood. Hardly torqued at all and had a couple of screws brake off in the wood at the shank. Do yourself a favor and spend a little extra.

                          Snaps in half
These snap in half, we used pilot holes and were screwdriving by hand and they would just break

                            Absolute Junk
These screws are absolutely junk. I was trying to put them into a pre-drilled hole and every screw I tried the heads broke off. Buy a good quality screw like Midwest Fasteners or something similar. These are Chinese junk.

                              Snaps Easily
You’re probably like me - reading the reviews, seeing some people say they snap in half and assuming they’re just doing something wrong. I’m here to tell you they aren’t. I pre-drilled every hole and used LOW torque from the drill (no impact driver) on the screw with no weight pulling it while I’m fastening. These things might as well be made of plastic.

                                Heads break off!
I was using brass screws and they broke off so I got the zinc. I am putting drawer tracks back in after painting the cabinets. Just using existing holes and they break off at the head when they are just about in so nothing to work with to get them out. Time consuming and a pain to drill them out and scuffed new paint, really angry!
