A:  15 X 15 X depth (in feet)/0.5 i.e. if depth is 1" (0.08333feet) answer would be 15X15X0.0.08333/0.5=38 bags. I used fewer bags since my planter was much smaller.

Q:Are you saying that 40 lbs covers .5 cubic feet? So, If I've got 30 cubic feet to cover, I'd need 60, 40-lb bags?

                Answer This Question

A:  Are you sure you don’t mean 30 square feet? If square feet, you then need to decide how thick of a layer of rock. For 30 sf, 2.5 cu ft is needed for each inch of rock layer. So for a layer 2 inches thick for example, you’d need 5 cu ft of stone. So 10 bags in that case.

A:  Yes, but why would one want a depth of 1 foot? If the rock is decorative much less than 1 foot would be adequate.
