Q:These say 7 inches deep. However, because of the piece of wood on the front what is the actual USEABLE space on the inside of the shelf?

A: inside depth is only 5.5" and because of the lip, you couldn't fit a book that size.

A: I’m not sure, how much it can hold, but I used it over my toilet as floating shelves and don’t have too much on it.
I would assume if you properly Install it, up to 40 lbs

A: It is exactly 5.5 inch from the backing to the lip. So it should probably work
