A:  Yes, they can. I installed mine on the wallboard next to our shower. If you install this grab assist bar on ceramic tile you will need a 1/4 inch carbide tip drill bit if drilling into a wood wall stud and a 1/2 inch carbide tip drill bit if drilling through tile into wallboard. You will also need to apply a bead of sealant for wet applications to the back face of both ends of the grab bar to prevent water from bleeding through the mounting holes and damaging the wallboard. You will also need to buy a Delta Hollow Wall Anchor Model DF548 (sold separately) if you are drilling into just wallboard and not a wood stud. The Delta DF548 wall anchors are package 3 anchors per side. The installation instructions that come with the Grab Assist Bar and Delta DF548 wall anchors(sold separately) are very detailed. I recommend a good stud sensor ie Dewalt 0150 or a strong magnet to locate the wood stud. Usually studs are spaced 16" apart so only one end of the assist bar which is 9" center to center will be screwed into a stud. Hope this helps.
