Q:I have 3 steps (very standard stair size) leading up from garage to house. How long of rail do I need? 3 ft or 4 ft?

Answer This Question

A:  Hi JayC. In most cases a 3 ft. will suffice. However, following IRC code, you will want to run the handrail 12 inches past the last stair which would require the 4 ft. Thank you for your question. Dan H. (EZ Handrail Dev. Team)

A:  According to building code: Handrails shall run continuously from a point directly over the lowest riser to a point directly over the highest riser. So you'll just have to measure from the lowest/first step (not the garage floor) to the highest/last step to see which length will satisfy code.

Q:Are the ends of the EZ aluminum handrails open or closed? (To prevent insects getting inside.)

A:  Hi Earl. The ends are open and are designed to return to a wall or hard substrate. When insects are a concern, we recommend filling the ends with Great Stuff expanding foam or we have designed an adequate (not great) 3D-printed plastic end plug that can be siliconed in. Email support@ezhandrail.com to purchase the end plugs. Thank you for your question. Dan H. (EZ Handrail Dev. Team)

        Answer This Question

A:  The edge of the 2" mounting bracket can be as close as 4 inches from the tip of the curved handrail. This is true at both ends.

Q:Can this be cut to specific lengths? What is the process if so?

          Answer This Question

A:  Hi KenD. As this handrail kit ships it cannot be cut to specific lengths. However, combined with the 5" splice (EZA650-M) you can cut it to specific lengths by cutting out a section (e.g. 6") and then splicing it back together so that it is now 42" tip to tip. This is very common and finishes off nicely. Here are a couple of best practices: 1) Carefully determine where you make your first cut into the handrail: it should be at the point of least hand traffic and also aesthetically pleasing. This is usually in the upper half of the handrail (which really is either half because they are identical). It just helps me to think this way when planning the install and bracket location. 2) Cut the handrail with a WOOD cutting blade on your chop or circular saw (not a metal cutting blade) similar to how you would cut 2x4 lumber. Ensure both cuts are straight so the ends align smoothly when you splice it back together. 3) Insert splice into both ends of the handrail and tap handrail back together using a rubber mallet or hammer with a wood block to protect the powder coat finish. Although not required, some installers like to apply epoxy onto the splice prior to reassembly. We fully support the use of any general epoxy. If you use Gorilla glue, be very careful of its expansion characteristics onto the powder coat finish I love Gorilla products, but this handrail/splice cavity is a precision fit with little room for any adhesive. Thank you for your great question. Dan H. (EZ Handrail Dev. Team)

Q:What is the offset from the surface to which the rail is attached? My porch has pool coping on the edges with a 2-inch overhang. The railing would need to be able to clear this overhang.

A:  Hi BettyBoop. The offset is 1.5" so you will want to "block out" the bracket mounting surface with a PVC board (e.g. Azek) or treated lumber. Thank you for your question Dan H. (EZ Handrail Dev. Team)
