Q:If I screw these into the cut off end of a 2x4, will it split the wood without predrilling holes?

Answer This Question
A: I used them on 2x10's but i did not pre drill the holes. It did not split out the wood. I would recommend it at least an inch from the side of the wood just in case. Mine was in the main part of the post.

A: I would suggest you back off about 2 inches if not pre drilling and then I had no problem

A: I screwe 2 of them into the ends of 2x8s and there was no sign of splitting. Really pulled the woo together great.
by|Nov 13, 2020
A: I have had this occur. I predrill the board(s) you are going through to prevent this. Looking at the design on the fastener you can see the first portion of it goes straight through and it bits into the final material so predrilling is acceptable and has prevented splitting for me.

Q:What is the diameter of the head? I would like to counter sink.

Answer This Question
A: The head of the screw is 17mm.

A: Just a guess, but the diameter is maybe around half inch. Its only about 1/8 inch thick, so if you're sinking it into a softer wood, it will counter sink itself.

Q:Can these screws be used to fasten the deck planks or do they stick out above the deck surface enough to cause a tripping hazard?
by|Jun 2, 2020

Answer This Question
A: Absolutely they would stick up too much. Also these would be way too expensive for that purpose. Just use regular 3-in deck screws
by|Mar 5, 2021
A: Unless you were to drill counterbores the heads would stick up above the surface of the deck boards.

Q:can I use this to connect my ledger to the wall, instead of ledgerlok?

A: I am honestly not sure. Maybe a longer version would work. But I really don't know
by|May 11, 2020
A: I would not. Tying the ledger board into the framing of the house is most important part of building a deck. Through all the changes freeze cycles and moisture change the wood dances around a bit. These fasteners only have about a quarter inch shake. Not something I would trust.
Personally I would use through rod systems that tie to the inside floor joists. Regardless of how you feel about the extra cost and labor. Or just build the deck freestanding. I went with the freestanding deck because my outside wall structure has form.
Good luck with project! Just build it for 30 of closes relatives. That’s my wife test.

A: Yes we have used them for fastening ledgers to wall or posts. Just make sure they go into something solid as wall studs, header, in your framing.

Q:This FastenMaster 2-7/8 vs. Spax 3"? Comparisons?

Answer This Question
A: the 3 inch screw might have its' point stick out the other side.. if set fully into two layers of 1.5 inch thick boards. The 2 7/8 FastenMaster gives good grip on the second board but will not go though. That is why I used the 2 7/8 inch screw.

Q:Are these recommended for use on LVL’s in order to tie them together to create a beam?
by|Jul 14, 2019

Answer This Question
A: I would absolutely recommend these for tying 2 LVL together. You would have to come from either side. Depending on the size of the LVL s. I would suggest two from each side every 16 in
by|Jul 16, 2019
A: No. Theses are not the right product. They make a specific product for LVL.
by|Mar 17, 2021
A: I used some for exactly that purpose. Applied glue first and then used Headlocks in a staggered pattern to permanently join 2 2X12 LVL's together, placed between steel columns as the base for an elevated shear wall. Building dept loved it.

Q:I have 6" x 6" (5 1/2" x 5 1/2" actual) deck posts that I'm using for railing. Note that these are not the main deck post that hold up the deck; so strictly using these post for railings. Instead of using carriage bolts and notching these post so they sit on the joist, can I use blocking and then use four of these flat head fasteners (2 on one side and 2 on the other)?

A: If you are angle drilling these screws I would drill the holes to counter sink them. I used these screws to hold corbels on my front porch. They worked perfect. I only used one on each side of the corbel. I counter sunk them so I did not see the screw. Because of the length I would go deeper into the wood so you would not tear out the post. Hope this helps.
