Q:Why is this happening?

Answer This Question

A:  Could be that some debris, minerals, sand, etc... has gotten stuck or built up inside this fill valve causing it to not close all the way... but more likely this fill valve is working fine and your flapper is allowing water pass it and the fill valve is doing its job. Regardless, this is a $10 part, just replace it if you haven’t done so in a year or more.

A:  if you installed a new float and you have that problem, its probably not the float but a faulty flapper

by|Nov 4, 2018

A:  the flapper may need cleaning to allow it to seat properly

by|Nov 4, 2018

A:  Water is leaking from the toilet tank and entering the toilet bowl. When this occurs the tank water drops enough to trigger the fill vale to turn back on. This "ghost flush" is what you are hearing. Try and replace the flapper valve and clean the bottom of the tank to stop this from happening.

    by|Nov 5, 2018

A:  In my experience those flushes are due to a leaky flapper that leaks water into the toilet and hence lowering the water level in the tank and triggering the fill valve to activate. One easy way to check for a leaky flapper is to shut the water supply to the tank and see if the water level drops. Since the valve is activating every 30-45 seconds, you should see a drop in the level pretty quickly.

A:  You may need to replace the flapper

        by|Nov 5, 2018

A:  Never heard of a toilet flushing itself. Is there something triggering the flush handle? Also, check the water height adjustment (see instructions included with product). You may want to check the proper operation of the flapper too. Other than these suggestions, you may actually have a ghost on the premises.

          by|Nov 4, 2018

A:  When you get ghost flush, it is usually due to slow water leak. Replace the flapper, this might be the cause. If water is still leaking, you may have to replace the flush assembly. HD sells the flush repair kit. The rubber seal gets dry over time which can create ghost leak. I used Fluidmaster kit, it has been working great for few months.

            by|Nov 5, 2018

A:  This is the fill valve. Your tank is draining water through the flush flapper. The level is going down slowly and the valve is doing what it's supposed to do; keep your tank filled. Replace the flush flapper and you'll be "ready to go".

Q:I replaced all my toilet fill valves with these. All seemed to work for about a week. After that the float would rise as usual but the valve would not stop the water flow when it reached the top - continuing into the overfill. I can hold the valve arm as high as it goes, and the water will not shut off. Worked for a while and then seems to have stopped working completely. What's the deal here?

A:  You probably have it set to high. Take it out and twist it lower.

                by|May 5, 2023

A:  if you raise the arm and it doesn't shut off it sounds like your new fill valve is defective. take your receipt and fill valve back and they will replace it.

                  by|May 5, 2023

A:  you have to adjust them properly, you might have them to high or just turn the adjusting screw backwards, first, if that doesn't work, then shorten them a bit.. they are universal for most toilets, but I also have gotten some defective fill valves . Good luck, RoseBud.

A:  Dirt has come through your plumbing and lodged in the tiny opening the valve creates two allow water flow through it. Turn the water off, flush the toilet to drain the water out of the tank so you can find the tiny seal that may come out of the valve. Carefully snap open the cap on the valve. Carefully rotate the top of the valve about 30 degrees and it will come apart. Rinse any sand or dirt off the piece that comes out. Hold a rag over the top of the valve and turn on the water to rinse anymore debris through. The water will just fall into the toilet tank. Be careful not to lose the tiny o-ring seal that may come out of the top of the valve. Reassemble.

                  by|May 5, 2023

A:  Did you adjust the height of the shut-off float? The whole thing can be adjusted. The bottom of the float has to be an inch below the overflow pipe. Do you still have your directions? If not, pretty sure you can get a copy on-line. My memory is a little bit off, but if you lift the float by hand & it doesn’t shut the water off, it may be faulty. After reading your explanation again, adjust it down a notch or two. How many did you replace when you say “all”? We really like ours and we have rentals we use them in. Very surprised to hear of your problems. Hopefully it’s a minor adjustment needed.

A:  Thank you for your question concerning the 400A Universal Toilet Fill Valve (Contractor 3-Pack) @ The Home Depot. This problem could be caused by dirt or debris being pushing into the valve from the water supply line. The valves which are not functioning properly should be flushed out to remedy this. Please follow our troubleshooting instructions for flushing the valve out or watch this video showing the process: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AabLItDN-qk For additional questions on any Fluidmaster product please contact us at your earliest convenience. A:  All three are acting the same way? Do they all rise to the same level? And did you try turning that stick to raise the valve? Usually I replace these when pulling up the valve does not stop the water flow then it's an internal problem. But for all 3...that's weird. Contact fluidmaster and they'll be able to help you

A:  Sounds to me like you are getting sediment from your water supply. This would be the most logical reason all the valves would fail at the same time. Shut off the water to the toilet. Remove the black cap on top of the 400A valve. Remove and clean the rubber diaphragm. Replace the diaphragm and black cap. The valve should work fine at this point. However, if your water supply has a constant stream of sediment, this will just be an ongoing problem.

                      A:  time to replace it

                      by|May 5, 2023

A:  The valve under the top cap could be clogged with debris from the water supply. Pop the cap off carefully, twist the top to release and open the valve, turn on the water supply valve (with a towel covering the top of the unit) and purge the dirt.

A:  We need more information, but if you're trying to say your old fill valve stopped filling water, maybe a part inside is broken. This is a cheap option if your toilet is still relatively new. Good luck!

                      by|May 5, 2023

A:  it stopped filling water because: the water is shut off somewhere, the flapper is stuck in an open position which will cause the fill valve to run continuously, there is a stoppage (sand, pebbles, dirt) between the supply valve and the supply tube, the supply tube and the fill valve, or in the top of the fill valve assembly disassemble and inspect

                      by|May 5, 2023

A:  When the water raised the float connected to the adjustable fill valve rod, the fill valve arm raised to close the fill valve, which stopped the water flow.

Yes the 400A will work on most "older" models of toilets including Toto. However a lot of Toto toilets require a higher than normal refill rate to the toilet bowl and our model 400AH-HD (PerforMAX Max Performance Toilet Fill Valve) would be a better choice. A:  I've been installing these for decades. If the water is coming out of the cap, it is not seating properly. There's probably rust or dirt in the seat. Pry the cap off. Take the valve apart by turning the inside valve mechanism and clean out the seat/washer by turning on the shut off valve (carefully with a rag over it) to rinse the valve. Put it back together again............ or just replace the whole thing............... It''s cheap.

To adjust the fill valve you must twist the valve on itself. Grab hold of both the top and bottom of the valve and turn the bottom of the valve in a clockwise or counter clockwise direction. Once you have the valve height set inside the tank you can further adjust the water level by twisting the fill valve adjustment rod which will raise or lower the fill valve float for setting the correct water level.
