Q:How do I interpret the LEDs?

A:  The green LED is to show that it is grounded and the red for a surge.

    A:  Thank you for your inquiry, The red light indicates that the surge protection feature is working. The green light indicates the unit is grounded. Both lights should be on when the swivel surge protector is working properly. Best Regards,

              A:  It can be plugged in directly to the outlet. The only thing is you have to take out the existing screw (on the face plate) and screw in this unit with the longer screw coming with this item.
