Q:Will this screw on to a tapered male pipe? Will the seal be ok? Or does it only screw on to straight male pipe?

Answer This Question

A:  it will screw on to tapered male pipe thread. The seal is made by the washer in the nut sealing against the end of the nipple that you are connecting to.

Q:The installation directions say not to use a thread sealant or tape. My Rheem water heater has plastic heat trap inserts. Will just the rubber washer in this pipe provide the needed seal? I'm thinking a couple wraps of Teflon tape would insure a leak proof seal?

A:  The seal is provided by the rubber washer. A tape does nothing good to the seal.

A:  Always , always , always .....use both the thread tape on the nipple going around 6 to 8 times ....then apply a even thin layer on top of that with the pipe dope . I have installed 100s of water heaters over 35 years ....this is how it is done . .

A:  This a followup to my own question. The fitting on the water heater leaked when we turned the water back on! It took some serious tightening to get a leak free seal! I suspect this issue has to do with the plastic heat trap inserts on the Rheem water heater inlet & outlet. If you look at the attached picture, you can see that the flexible copper pipe gasket seals on the top, but not on the bottom of that plastic heat trap insert. That that plastic heat trap moves, it's not molded onto the the water heater pipe fitting. By tightening the flexible copper fitting nut, it compressed the rubber gasket to seal the plastic heat trap inserts. In hindsight, I should have gone with Teflon thread sealing tape.

A:  The seal is made when the end of the pipe is pushed against the washer. The seal is not made at the threads. Do not use thread tape, it will make it more difficult to "hand tighten." Do not use pipe dope on the threads either. Please follow the instructions.

Q:What is the wrench size for the nut on the copper line (being threaded into male pipe that will be on both ends)? I realize the connection is 3/4 but the nut has to be bigger size wrench, right?

A:  Pete, you are correct. 3/4 inch is the pipe size. I recommend that you use an adjustable wrench. An adjustable wrench will adjust to a large jaw opening while not making the wrench handle too long. you can use a 1-1/8 inch open end wrench on the nut on this corrugated copper water heater connector. Caution, follow the installation instructions. DO NOT OVER TIGHTEN the nuts.

A:  1 1/8" wrench is typical for this type of connector.
