Q:On this switch, there is a brass screw on the top right side of the switch and a black screw on the bottom right side of the switch. I have two black wires connected to both of these screws on the right side. On the left side, there is a green screw, obviously the ground, and then a brass screw on the bottom left side - I have a red wire connected to this. I'm replacing this switch with a Defiant in-wall digital timer and I need to know which of the black wires is the load and which is the load side and which is the line side. Thank you in advance.

A: So depending on what end of your three way circuit you’re at the black screw is the “common” in this basic three way switching. So one black screw gets power: if power toggles from the red to one of your blacks by cycling your other switch then you have the common to your light or load and whatever wire did not show voltage when cycling the other three way is your wire to the light/ load and it goes to black screw. If you have a wire that is consistently hot then you have the supply voltage end and that constant hot goes to your black screw. Everything else are just travelers keeping voltage at the ready for use at either switch, wether it is another toggle switch or a dimmer, timer etc. Hope that is clear enough to follow.

A: Doesn't matter. You can put the line on either side.

A: On a three way switch, there should be one brass or dark colored screw which will be for the line or load side of the switch. The two silver screws which will be for your traveler wires, and a green screw for your ground wire.

Q:does this switch have a central OFF position ?

A: No this one works just like a regular switch, on or off. Three way switches in "pairs" let you turn on a light from one side of the room/hallway, and off from another side of the room/hallway. If you are looking for a switch that has a center off position, you need a "double throw" switch. Those usually in up position turns one thing on, then in the down position will turn something else on, with the center being the Off position.

A: It does not gave a central off position.

A: That's not how these switches work. In order to use a 3-way switch, you need to have 3-way wiring installed in your wall. That means two alternating hot wires, one neutral, and a ground. There would be FOUR wires in your Romex pair, a red (hot), a black (hot), a white (neutral), and a green (ground).
The way it works is, power is fed to both switches separately from the same circuit to ensure the circuit is able to be complete so long as one switch is switched on.
For a 3-way switch to work, you would have TWO three-way switches installed in a home. For a 4-way switch to work, you would have THREE 4-way switches installed in a home.
Do not install this to replace an existing wall switch that is not already 3-way.

A: This sounds like one end of a 3-way switch. Does the switch in question have counterpart(s) that can also turn the lights on and off? If yes, then you do need a Leviton Decora 3-way configuration.

A: Yes. Hopefully one black is live. The other is load. A Klein or similar current detector sold by HD will help confirm. Bing/Google search for 3 way circuit designs. Get a sacrificial friend or a professional electrician to help if in doubt and your health insurance has a high deductible.

A: Yes

A: Yes that is the correct amount of wires for a 3-way switch. You MUST get the wires hooked back up in the correct positions. Normally on the switch is one black screw which will be your hot wire or the wire going to the light, two brass colored screws those wires will go to the next 3-way switch, the one green screw for your green or bare ground wire. Between different brands these screws can be in different locations top/bottom. So if unsure best let an electrician figure it out.

Q:I don't like or want logo in bottom left. Not clean. What's a good competitor product to purchase until Leviton remove the presumptuously placed logo?

A: The company logo or mark is there to identify the manufacturer. This is useful in case there is a product issue and you need to contact the manufacturer. Once installed and put a cover on it you will not see the logo.

A: Just buy the right switch

A: The hot on the side with one screw gets the hot wire. The load can be place on one of the screws on the side with two screws.Just determine which one is on when the switch is turned on. Then tighten the empty screw.
