A: That depends on what the fire place requires, this is a line voltage 15 amp switch not meant for low voltage.

A: Yes, it matters. Besides the fact that you would create a fire-risk, you would also violate the NEC (National electrical code). You may only use a device at the Amperage/Voltage for which it is rated by the Manufacturer.

A: If your wire is rated for 20a but your switch is not, you are not compliant per code and could overload the switch. Overloaded wires, switches and outlets will trip breakers or start fires.
