Q:I am planning on installing a grab bar on a fiberglass shower/bath one piece. The side wall where the installation will take place is about 2" total width, but it's believed to be just air, no stub behind. So would it still work?

A:  I used these on my tile shower walls for a pair of stainless steel grab bars, with great success. I believe that it is recommended, but not mandatory that they be anchored into a stud so they can support the weight of someone pulling their body weight on them. That being said, tile is likely thicker than a sheet of fiberglass and provides a more compatible surface to support the force of a person’s weight grabbing the bar for support. Research the manufacturer’s specifications and recommendations for a definitive solution.

A:  Frankly, I don’t know.  But it probably will.  All the device is, is an anchor.  Make a hole; push the backing through the hole; then screw the bolt through the grab bar and into the anchor.

A:  i dont see how you would cut the bar but if it is to wide for the studes try useing a moen secure mount they work great.

                          by|Mar 27, 2022

A:  You can run the bar diagonally so you don’t have to cut it. Also, if you use the secure mount you won’t need to worry about the studs.  It works really well and secured.

A:  Hello and thank you for your interest in Moen products. We do not advise to cut the bar shorter as we cannot suggest it will install properly and cutting the unit voids the warranty. We advise to purchase a shorter bar. Our product specialists are available for pre-purchase, installation, and warranty assistance. They can be reached at 1-800-289-6636 and are available Monday through Friday from 8:00 am – 7:00 pm Eastern Time.

A:  No I wouldn't cut the bar, use a MOEN Secure Mount, you don't need to go into the stud. The mount is a strong hold behind the wall.

A:  It does not. In order to install this you need to drill a very large (1" hole) in the wall to be able to slide the plastic anchor behind the cement board. I used this for installing in the bathroom walls where there is drywall. If I had needed bars in the shower I would have made sure to mount directly to studs. If you absolutely had to do this - you could seal around the round mounting plate backing with silicone where it contacts your shower tile. (if you have a fiberglass or other thin shower surround don't try this - & avoid grout lines), then again around the center mounting bolt that holds the round mounting plate to the anchor. It won't guarantee that you get no water damage, but it would certainly minimize the possibility. The round mounting plate gives pretty decent coverage of the 1" hole in the wall - with the exception of where the center bolt goes through. I'd also put a pretty decent amount of silicone around it after the mounting plate was on. Capillary action can make water do amazing (and bad) things. The reason I say don't use this with a fiberglass surround is there is always an air gap between the surround and the cement board (or drywall /plywood if older construction). You could try going through both the fiberglass and the layer behind, but then you are pulling the fiberglass against the backing which might crack your fiberglass. If you don't go through the backing then the bar will rip your surround as soon as you put weight on it. Plus the flexing of fiberglass would compromise any seal you might be able to get. Youtube might have a better answer though.

A:  I don't think this "automatically' makes a waterproof seal. I put a bead of silicone caulk around the hole and under the round mounting plate opening. Then when I attached the grab bars did the same with the round cover plate that snaps on to the mounting system. Just a simple common sense thing to do.

A:  I would NOT be inclined to use this in a wet application like a shower. You are required to cut a 1” HOLE in the shower tile to insert the standard that stays inside the wall. If the showers have not been blocked with 2x10’s around the perimeter, it’s best to locate the wall studs and screw the bar directly to them. In that case you’ll only have a few screw holes you can waterproof with silicone and the bar with be solidly connected.

A:  No it does not. You would have to place a seal on the inside of the plate to the wall. If the shower does not directly spray on the mounting plate all the water should drain off the outside plate. I just replaced the shower and none of the walls showed any water stains behind the mounts.

A:  No, the product itself does not. As with any hole you would put in a shower or tub area will need to be sealed with some kind of silicone. Would recommend a small amount of silicone behind the plate to prevent any leak issue you may have.

A:  If you spin the anchor, you will see a white membrane on the back of the anchor. This will provide a waterproof seal once final installation is done. This should have a thin paper covering over it which must be removed before final installation.
