Q:Anyone know why this transition cement doesn’t bond pvc to pvc? I used primer, sanded joints applied transition cement. That was yesterday. I pulled the joint apart by hand this morning as easily as if it wasn’t glued

Answer This Question

A:  This product is not approved or guaranteed for PVC-to-PVC connections. Pipes and joints should not be sanded before installation. This affects the interference fit of the joint. If you have any further questions, please contact us technical@oatey.com.

Q:In a jam , can you use this to glue abs to abs ?

    Answer This Question

A:  Yes. But such a joint is for non-pressure (drain) applications only. Oatey's FAQs about the product make this clear where it is stated, "FAQ Can I use green transition cement to join different types of pipe together? Green transition cement can be used to join ABS to PVC or any variation of the two, but only if local building codes approve the application." Note, too that the issue of local Code compliance is raised...

A:  It does not stick to abs vary well at all. I used it on low pressure turtle tank fittings for the filter and it forms a hard shell on the abs, which slides right out of the shell.

      by|Jul 7, 2020

A:  Yes we would still recommend priming the PVC side of the connection.

Q:I want to use this to glue ABS to PVC inside a residential water tank. So: 1) can it be applied and later remain underwater? 2) can it withhold pressure up to 100psi from a 1/2 HP water pump?

A:  Hello Ramonolivenica; I have used the ABS to PCV on residential water lines extending over 2oo feet, with PSI max of 85-on and 60-off. The PSI rating for the PVC is 100 psi for both hot and cold. Extending to the max rated PSI on any equipment or product tends to call for trouble somewhere along the line.

A:  Let me answer your questions in this way - it all depends upon the specifics of your application. 1. Cements used for ABS and PVC are designed to make a water-tight seal at the joint IF PROPERLY APPLIED. In most applications, the pipe has water running through it or is filled with water continually. That being said, there is little reason why the joint cannot be submerged in water and hold its seal. Once again, it depends upon the specifics of the joint such as diameter, temperature, proper application of cement and how the joint is made, the grip area of the joint and cure time. (see the pictures below that cover these issues). 2. PVC is generally approved and designed for pressure applications. Most residential water pressures can run from 40 PSIG to as much as 120 PSIG averaging around 80 to 85 PSIG continuous. ABS on the other hand is primarily designed for non-pressure applications such as sewer lines or drain lines where the is not continual water pressure. So these points being made, it will really depend upon the specifics of your application. The transition cement is a great quality product and used properly, it will yield good results. Hope this is helpful.

A:  Yes it will hold under water. It will hold at 100 psi but that is very high psi. The higher the psi the more likely a rupture will take place. I would not suggest over 70psi

        by|Aug 10, 2019

A:  This is designed for drainage pipe and not for 100 psi, I would not use it under that type of pressure.

A:  Once cured the joint can remain underwater. Our cements will handle what the PIPE is designed to handle. ABS is a non-pressure pipe so we recommend you reach out to the pipe manufacturer in this instance.

          Answer This Question

A:  We would not recommend this cement for application that do not involve ABS-DWV pipe/fittings and PVC-DWV pipe/fittings. We would recommend that you reach out to the Plexiglass manufacture for their recommendations on approved products to make repair. Remember that the use of of non approved products could affect your warranty.

          by|May 6, 2023

A:  No, this cement is not suitable for plexiglass repair or joints. For Plexiglass, you must use Acrylic Cement. It is a very thin and clear liquid. You apply it to the joints using a very fine point syringe. It dries quickly but requires several hours to develop a strong bond. Hope this is helpful.

            by|Jun 10, 2019

A:  Nope. Just ABS to PVC (or CPVC) transitions.

            by|Nov 3, 2019

A:  No, this is not made for that type of fix. Depending what crack and location of crack is, you could try modeling cement, apply to both sides for best fix.

A:  No, this is designed to cement ABS to PVC

A:  Yes, but make sure this is not a pressure pipe as you may want regular PVC glue and primer too. Mark your pieces with marker during dry fit before you glue them.

A:  The International Plumbing Code section 707.1 Prohibits solvent cement joints between different types of plastic pipe. The ASTM 3138 standard listed on the can of cement is not listed in the referenced standards of the IPC. IT IS NOT APPROVED.

A:  You will need to use an ABS cement such as #30902 to bond ABS to ABS as long as the diameter is 6" or smaller. You do not ever use Primer on ABS pipe.

A:  I'm assuming your schedule 40 and schedule 80 fittings are both ABS. Are they both black? If so, use Oatey's black ABS cement found here: https://www.homedepot.com/p/Oatey-4-oz-ABS-Cement-309993/100136815

A:  You do not use primer on the ABS part of the joint, only on the PVC or CPVC parts. ABS should be cleaned with the clear pipe cleaner only. Purple primer is the right product to use on the PVC part of the joint. Just don't use it on the ABS parts as it is not necessary. (see pictures below)

                  by|Feb 2, 2020

A:  You do not Prime ABS pipe. In the case of the Transition Cement, we recommend using an NSF listed Purple or Clear Primer on the PVC PORTION ONLY of the joint.
