Q:Doesn't this shrub keep its color all year? Or does it die down and just come back every spring?

      Answer This Question

A:  Hi, thank you for your question. The Forsythia is usually covered in bright yellow blooms for a few weeks each spring. Then, the flowers fall off and the green leaves emerge. The shrub is green until late fall, when the leaves die and drop to the ground, leaving the branches bare throughout winter. This cycle occurs every year.

        Answer This Question

A:  Hi, Jimmy, thank you for your questions. If desired, fertilize in spring when new growth begins. Apply 2 tbsp. of an all-purpose slow release fertilizer upon the ground in a band around the plant at least 6” away from its stem. And as for no blooms: The Forsythia flower buds are set the year before it blooms. Pruning the shrub too late in the year will remove the wood that has these flower buds on it. It is best to trim the plant about two weeks after it stops blooming. Other possibilities are unseasonably cold or harsh winter temperatures or early spring freezes which can kill the buds.

A:  Not sure I planted it in the ground in a flower bed. So far it has been disappointing since it's not grown much. Not in a Bush form

              Answer This Question

A:  Hi Cindy, thank you for your question. The Forsythia ship soon after ordering. The plants are currently dormant and to store them, simply unpack, give them a bit of water, and store in an unheated area such as a garage until ready to plant. You can plant outside as soon as the ground unfreezes; the plant has been overwintered in unheated polyhouses so they are acclimated to the cold weather. As with other spring blooming shrubs, the branches have flower buds already and the only concern would be a late spring frost that might kill some of those buds.
