Q:Sorry for being a little more than ignorant, but I thought I'd ask, anyways. Since this uses a single cleat at a time, are there boxes of single cleats available, rather than buying ones that come in sticks for a standard nailer and having to break one off at a time?

A: I always have short lengths of cleat strips I just break apart to use for this nailer..
Also if it's a hard wood I find it is best to predrill so that you don't bend the cleat on the way in.

A: Never seen them in boxes I always brake them up or have my wife do it so she won’t be bored ;)

Q:The manual says only use Powernail Powercleats but they have to be ordered. Can you use other cleats like Bostitch? They can be found on the shelf locally.

A: Hey there SneakyPete (couldn't resist using that name. Please forgive me.)
Our PowerPalm cleat nailer will drive any 16-18 gauge "L" or "T" style flooring cleat on the market. You will not have any problems with the Bostitch cleats.

A: I've used this tool with other brands of cleats and it works fine. It's like saying can I use a different brand of nails for my bostitch finish nailer.... if its the same gauge and the angle of the nail matches and is a good quality nail it should work. In this instance Powernail will always recommend using it's own nails for several reasons. 1st why would they recommend another competitors nails, 2nd It was designed for use with there nails and 3rd they actually sell good quality nails.

A: Greetings David!
Our PowerPalm was designed specifically for the installation of flooring cleats. ("L" or "T" style, 16-ga or 18-ga.)

A: This is made to drive flooring cleats. It's possible that it may drive in other things, but I'm not sure how well that will work.

Q:I'm installing solid, 9/16 stranded bamboo flooring over a native red oak subfloor. Will it be necessary to drill pilot holes when using 18ga nails?

A: Thanks floorguy. Too bad the site edited important info from my question. 18ga cleats wont make it thru the surface of stranded bamboo and 16 ga wont penetrate a second layer of oak under the bamboo.

A: I have used this cleat nailer before, its a great tool and time saver. But from experience when blind nailing or nailing through the tongue portion on stranded or stranded fossilized bamboo you will need a small guide hole. Or the cleat may bend because of the hardness of the wood. 18ga nails are the correct ones to use for this type of bamboo flooring your doing. For regular in the field nailing of the floor (aka not areas like first couple of rows, or last couple rows or areas a limited space for a regular flooring gun) use a regular 18ga flooring nail gun and no predrilling necessary. Also you'll want a strong 18ga nail, preferably one from the US. I've tried many from Mexico, China and Canada and most end up bending with either this tool or an 18ga floor nailer, need to look for nails made from strong steel.

A: I haven't used one but I would assume no. I am a hardwood floor installer and from what I have seen in them, I'd venture to advise you won't need to pilot hole as stretching a hole like that to fit a kleet could cause separation in the younger.

A: No predrilling is necessary when driving cleats.
