Q:How is it for flame resistant/fire retardant? I need it to protect carpet in my jewelry work space. I do soldering of small pieces of silver.

A: this mat does does come in a larger 3' x 5' size.
- in the standard 1/2 inch thickness (well... 9/16"... which is close enough to half an inch):

i don't think you'll get it 9' long. even on the manufacturer website, the max size currently listed is 3' by 6'. unless you are buying a full industrial roll which is 75' (yes seventy-five feet!) long.

A: Placing them side by side could work BUT they are beveled along all the outside edges to help prevent tripping. They are not designed to hook together.
