Q:I have a propane fire pit and the top has some scratches and chips on it. Can I use this and brush the top base of the fire pit. I attached a stock image below of what the top looks like.

Answer This Question

A:  All I can honestly tell you is that I painted the inside of my fireplace at the end of the season. Come fall, I built a fire with no combustion, no fire flares and no odor. Your fire pit is outdoors. In addition you'll be applying the product mainly for aesthetics. If I was you I wouldn't think twice about using Rust-oleum bar-be-que enamel paint. Just so you won't be disappointed, you won't get a shiny new appearance. If you're like me, the word enamel congers up images of shine. It goes on with some gloss but it dries flat. Good product and if you're expectations aren't for 'gloss', you'll be happy with the results.

Q:Can i use this product to paint security bars

    Answer This Question

A:  I would sand them first to ensure adherence. Getting paint to stick to anything without rough surface to grip, might mean product failure which would be an unfair judgment call.. Are your security bars rusty? Are the iron or steel? The reason I ask is that if they're aluminum, the product might not hold up as well on an aluminum surface. Because, aluminum might be hard to do the prep work I suggested.

A:  We appreciate your interest, Tam! Rust-Oleum Specialty High Heat Enamel Paint is intended for use on surfaces that reach warmer temperatures. If the surface will not be heated, the coating will not fully harden or cure. If the surface does not reach temperatures above 200°F, we recommend Rust-Oleum Stops Rust Enamel instead. https://www.homedepot.com/s/stops%2520rust%2520enamel?NCNI-5 - Rust-Oleum Product Support 3

A:  I see no problem if you can sand them a bit so the product will adhere better.

        by|Jan 16, 2023

A:  Apply the paint according the the label instructions and you will have a semi gloss finish that should last for years. Remember, preparation is the key to best outcome. Clean the surface, scuff the surface to a non glossy finish, and apply the paint with a quality brush or roller in thin even coats for best results.

A:  If your Heating Baseboards are "cast iron" then this will work great and is the right product. If your Heating Baseboards are "copper fin-tube" with a metal cover, than there are other more economical Rust-oleum Products that will work better.

Q:can i use for touch up on inside oven top
        by|May 19, 2021

        Answer This Question

A:  No, the inside of ovens are coated with special enamel coatings that with-stand over a 1000 degrees. This paint will burn away and could make harmful odors when doing so.

        by|May 30, 2021

A:  After it has cured the specified amount of time I, personally, would see no problem. I am basing this on the fact I have had some roaring fires and flames in my fireplace since the application and have had no problems. A couple of things to consider is the oven gas or electric? Gas? You might want to contact someone with more expertise than an on-line person. Someone with knowledge of fumes and the presence of a pilot light. Electric? Do as I suggested. Read any warnings on the can and proceed. After the application, there is a slight odor but not really that bad and it does not linger. And, too, you're saying "touch up" which means to me you are going to apply to spots and not the whole interior of the oven.. Another bit of information, this product is not glossy after it dries. It cures to a flat black.

          Answer This Question

A:  I've never thought about that but your question has inspired me! To get straight to an answer, this paint will not blister and I have had some ferocious fires. The reason I say your question gave me a splendid idea, I had two decorative, pressure treated posts set to accommodate bluebird houses. I don't want them to weather. And, I was thinking black rather than white. My house is trimmed in black. So, I'll get out my remaining Ruts-o-leum and put it to use. My thought is that it will be absorbed into the wood because that's what seemed to happen in my fireplace. The product bonded so well with the firebrick it didn't just lay on the surface.

          by|Apr 23, 2021

A:  While Rust-Oleum Specialty High Heat Enamel Paint will withstand higher temperatures, it is intended for use on metal surfaces and may not properly bond to wood. This coating also needs to be heated well above 350°F to fully cure. Our standard exterior spray paints can be used on wood and will withstand temperatures up to 200°F. - Rust-Oleum Product Support 3

A:  I used a high-speed drill with a metal brush on my grill cover to prep it. I sprayed the cover with a RUST-OLEUM primer, let it dry 24 hours, then applied the heat paint with a brush. It will save you headaches down the road.

A:  What do you have to loose if you try? I would, at least, scrape the rust with a wire brush and get the particles away It's the best shot you have. It's a good product but I have only used it inside the fireplace in my house.

              by|Apr 23, 2021

A:  All rust must be removed for this product to work as intended.

A:  This is a shot in the dark answer because I am trying to visualize what you are doing. Right off, this product does not need to be heat cured. With my fireplace/ firebrick, it was sort of absorbed into the brick. For aesthetics, I wanted it to remain shiny but it did not. If you never intend to use your stove for the purpose intended, and it's only for decorative purposes, I'd use a black Rust-O-leum gloss if you want a sheen. BUT!! Please, certainly not if you are going to build a fire inside. Use the Rust-O-leum bar-b-que paint instead. Hopefully you have some sort of way to dissipate the smoke if you intend to build a fire and it's in a covered area.

A:  I'm going to make a 'call' based on my own experience with this paint. I'm going to say yes, you can. Now, are you speaking of the interior or the exterior of the door? The reason I ask is that it is possible (though it did NOT with my fireplace) that fumes from the newly applied paint might exist. After all, we're talking about food bring cooked inside a facility with no air exchange. I painted the interior of my fireplace in the Spring so it was Fall before it was used again. But, even at the time of application I don't recall any unpleasant or paint smells. I am a big fan of this paint. It was easy to use and the results were great. So, even if you detect a chemical smell, I reiterate, I did not, it will not last past the first firing.

A:  If the existing paint has a shiny coating, it may not stick. I would try a small area first just to see how well it sticks. You may need to sand the drum lightly first.

A:  Thank you for reaching out. If the surface is galvanized at all, then the Rust-Oleum Specialty High Heat Spray will not be able to adhere. We suggest applying to a small test area first to ensure adhesion. Keep in mind that both paints need to be suitable to withstand high heat surfaces. If the original paint is not heat-resistant, then it will cause the paint on top to peel off. - Rust-Oleum Product Support 5

A:  follow directions on can, going from my memory ; I do not think it calls for any primer. just remove any loose paint or rust and it should be ok. If the drum is going to be in the weather you will need to be repainted in three to four years. I have used this product to maintain my chimney cap about ever four years with good success.

A:  Safe? Yes. Of course your pit will discolor again with use but it will retain it's good looks for quite some time. Perhaps years. I painted the inside of my fireplace three seasons ago and it still looks good. This product does not result with a sheen. It's more like flat black but it improves the appearance. Be sure to use a wire brush and remove any debris before you begin.

A:  When you build your next fire, it will burn off ( away ). The fumes may have an un-pleasant and they could cause respiratory issues. I would check with the manufacturer directly to find out if the fumes are hazardous before painting the inside of your pit.
