Q:If I buy a 300W transformer, how long of a run of wire can I use? And how many of the 4.5W lights can I hook up to it?

      Answer This Question

A:  Your power load should not exceed 80% of your transformer rating therefore if 300W transformer then do not exceed 240W consumption. If the lights are rated at 4.5W ea (assuming these are LED's being 4.5) then you can have up to 53 lights connected. The wire run can be as long as you'd like but keep in mind the longer the run the more voltage drop you will see. Generally anything up to 100 ft or so you'll be fine but anything longer and you'll see slight voltage drop (lights will start to become more dim). If your transformer is a multi-tap transformer, you can utilize the higher voltage tap to overcome this (e.g. 16v opposed to 12v)
