A:  They are work well without the tape.

A:  They stayed in place nicely for my 17 year old cat. Occasionally I would need to vacuum the rubber backs when hair/dust built up. They are very similar to the rubber backed rugs for bathrooms. After I lost my kitty I took them up; ended up putting them back down, a lot less noise from feet on the hardwood.

A:  With two cats in the house I had to add double stick tape to keep them in place.

A:  It is dependent on your stairs, but if the stairs are cleaned well (removal of dust etc.) before the stair treads are placed down they should grip very good without the need for any supplemental products. We have not had complaints of them slipping or sliding as they have a rubber backing which is meant to prevent this. However, some customers have chosen to use double sided tape as an extra measure to hold them in place.
