Q:Can this be used as kitchen backsplash? Would I need to treat it first so that it’ll be easy to clean if used as backsplash?

Answer This Question

A:  Hello Becca, Provided that the product does not receive excessive splashing/hanging into puddles of water on the countertop, it should be fine. It seems that sealing it beforehand would be a smart move, considering that exterior applications require an exterior wood protector sealant; while this will be used indoors, we can imagine that there is a good potential for some splashing from the sink. Should look beautiful.

Q:We will be installing this on a bathroom wall where there will be a vanity. Would you suggest installing the wall first, and then the vanity 2nd (so the vanity would have shiplap behind it) or installing the vanity first, and then doing the shiplap around the vanity (so the vanity would have sheetrock behind it)

        Answer This Question

A:  Allison, It seems that the choice is yours, but consider the following: Install shiplap (or tile, backsplash, etc.) after the cabinets are in place so any gaps or imperfections could be covered. Installing first means that you have room to work without the vanity being in the way; however, installing afterwards permits exact placement of the boards, from the countertop up. There would have to be some more fancy cutting if installing afterwards. If you install first, know that you will have to move the vanity if/when you decide to remove the shiplap. Hope this helps you in making your decision.

Q:I've just installed in my bathroom. Is there a specific product recommended for sealing these boards?

              Answer This Question

A:  PrairieDog22, Ideally you should seal all end cuts with a high quality finish paint to match. We also recommend that you seal any spots where moisture might come into contact with the boards with a high quality caulk; this is so that water does not sit on or get behind the wood. As for a specific product, talk with a Pro to determine a specific caulk that he or she recommends.

Q:How would you frame the edges of these boards so that the unfinished/raw edges don't show (like if you were creating a particular shiplap area on a larger wall)?
