Answer This Question
A: Yes this can be used on stained stairs. I would put 4 to 5 coats on in heavy traffic areas so it lasts longer. Good product. I’ve used this on shop furniture that takes a beating and the plywood walls in my shop and it looks great.

A: Glad to lend a hand! Rust-Oleum Varathane Water-based Floor Polyurethane can certainly be used over stained stairs. You can optionally use the Rust-Oleum Anti-Skid Additive with the finish. It will leave the coating feeling like sandpaper, but it will not affect the clarity/gloss level of the finish.

A: I lightly sand, vacuum the dust and wipe down with a mild solution of white vinegar and water.

A: I just use a Swiffer. Dry pads first and then the wet. Also use a vacuum nozzle around the edges and other areas that the Swiffer can't easily get to. Make sure nothing else is going on in the house that kicks up stuff in the air. The floors must be absolutely clean - else you will simply be fossilizing everything on the floor.

Q:Can a paint roller be used for large areas? I am refinishing 3 rooms and do not want to use a paint brush for this project.

A: Home Depot sells applicators that work better. Kind of a synthetic soft foam. Rollers are not recommended and I think they would leave a lot of air bubbles.

A: We used the "Applicator and More10 in. Lambskin Pad with Block" on a pole to cover our whitewashed plywood den flooring, which is almost 400sf, and it was easy to do and looks great. Two years later, it still looks as good as when we did it. We used 4 coats of the Varethane for our project.

A: Happy to help Stef. We do not recommend using a roller when applying Varathane Water Based Floor Finish Polyurethane. Apply using a good quality, synthetic bristle brush, foam brush or applicator. Allow finish to dry a minimum of 2 hours and then re-coat, recoat only when previous coats have dried clear and feel hard. A powder should develop when lightly sanded. If any coat has dried more than 24 hours, lightly sand before re-coating. Apply additional coats following directions above. A minimum of 4 coats is recommended. If grain raise occurs, sand smooth before final coat. Allow finish to dry 24 hours before light use. Wait 3 days before subjecting surface to normal usage.

A: I applied this using a paint pad (roughly 3x8”) with good results. I would advise using smallest nap possible.

A: I've used that method once. The fastest method but 1) rollers splatter, and 2) you risk leaving bubbles.

A: Yes, With a very short nap on roller, my floors turned out beautiful
