Q:I'm replacing an outdoor deck railing, and am assuming that pressure treated lumber like this 2 in. x 4 in. x 16 ft. #2 Prime Cedar-Tone Ground Contact Pressure-Treated Lumber is appropriate. However, it needs to painted right away to match my home. Should I use this pressure-treated lumber; or, since it needs to be painted immediately, should I just use conventional, untreated lumber?

A: To make sure the wood is ready to paint, please test it first. Place a drop of water onto the surface of the wood. If the water beads up, the moisture content is still too high for the wood to accept a sealant. If the water droplet wicks into the board, it is ready to accept a sealant. If it the water beads up on the board, give the wood more time to dry out. Repeat this test until the wood is dry enough to paint.

A: Yes. Know when to apply paint or a stain by dripping water onto the surface. If the water quickly absorbs into the wood it's time to apply a wood sealer — If the water droplets bead up, your deck is protected. Be sure to test annually.
