Q:my units are 2 years old and thet keep burning up elements and thermostats

Answer This Question
A: I have had several of these water heaters in service for several years without any problems with the elements or thermostats. Elements should always be submerged in water before receiving any current; when newly installed or partially drained, the tank needs to be filled completely with water and purged of any air in the tank. Your trouble sounds like an electrical problem and should be checked by an electrician to see if you have the required voltage and amperage being delivered to your water heater. The damaged thermostats should be checked to see if they may have received a power surge or lightening strike.

A: I have not had any problem with my heater. It has functioned perfectly and I can't imagine why your unit would burn up elements and thermostats. Sounds like you need to contact an expert.

A: My unit had a leak in the tank after only 6 months. This caused the heating elements to get wet and burn up. My entire unit had to be replaced.

A: I would have your electric current checked for any voltage or amperage irregularities. Even if it’s within spec when checked, might be spiking at times and damaging the components.

Q:If I install this myself as the homeowner, does that void the warranty?
by|Jan 22, 2019

Answer This Question
A: Reading the warranty description, it says the warranty is void if "Any water heater not installed by a qualified heating installer / service
technician, or installations that do not conform to ANSI, CSA, and/or UL
standards, as well as any applicable national or local building codes." I couldn't find where it better defined what a qualified heating installer / service technician is. http://www.westinghousewaterheating.com/literature/whl-035.pdf#page=17

A: Greetings, I did a lot of looking before buying this unit and other than going into a hybrid at over $2K, I found it to be perfect for the job. The only ratings (wattage/recovery/thermal efficiency) that I know of are those listed in the unit's description on the Home Depot site.

A: To be perfectly honest I don't have any details on how efficient this heater is. I can tell you that I have not noted a difference in my electric bill, compared to the old Statesman water heater I had. On another note, I would not buy another Westinghouse product after the issues I had with this unit. The first one lasted only 3 months before having an electrical failure of one heating element which thank God it didn't burn my home down. I notified Westinghouse and they routed a new heater to me within days. I installed the first unit and Westington house said they could cover the installation of the new hot water tank only if I had it profically installed. I did as they requested, and had it installed at a price of $600.00. Long story short, Westinghouse denied my install claim of $600 saying they reserve the right to deny installations do to product failure. I could have saved that money if I installed the unit myself. So if your thinking about another hot water heater. look to another Home Depot heater such as GE , Rheem or even move away from the hot water tank all together and install and install a tankless system. Something I'm going to do next. Home Depot carries a few brands.

A: All electric heating (water or air) is 100% efficient. There is no heat going up a chimney.

A: Depending on your water usage. This replaced a 20 year old 80 gallon water heater about the time we had two kids move in. The demand on this tank doubled for us but we didn't notice an significant change in our power bill.
