Q:I painted my fascia 6 months ago and it peeled severely, so I've scraped and sanded, I want the best primer I can to keep this from peeling again. Do you suggest your oil primer, or one of your Peel stop primers? Also, prime before and after filling?

    Answer This Question

A:  Thank you for reaching out, Carl. Rust-Oleum Zinsser Cover Stain Oil-Based Primer is great for most exterior surfaces. Prior to applying, any loose paint must be removed, and the surface must be clean and dry. Please keep in mind, if the previous paint was peeling due to moisture, then that should be remedied prior to recoating, as this is not considered a waterproofing product. If most of the paint has been removed, we do not recommend using our Peel Stop primers, as these are not intended for use on bare surfaces. We recommend checking with the recommendations on the filler if priming is recommended beforehand. If needing further assistance, please give us a call at 888-855-1774 to talk with us. - Rust-Oleum Product Support 3

A:  Dont use oil base primer or top coat for exterior applications. Its to brittle and will crack and peel. Use an acrylic water base primer . This will be more flexible to weather transitions.

A:  Thanks for reaching out, Faye! Zinsser Oil Based Cover Stain Primer is an oil based primer, it will have an odor similar to other oil based paints and primers. Keeping the room well ventilated will help dissipate any odor. Wiping the surface with a mild dish soap and water will also help reduce the odor. - Rust-Oleum Product Support 6

A:  This is a bonding primer. It is best on market. We have had a painting company for 25 years and this is the only outdoor primer we use. We use this on cabinets anything that is stained that we need to prime this primer is excellent. In my opinion I think this will do great.
