Oil-based polyurethane is by far the bext choice for finishing wood projects. It forms a tough hard layer that is impervious to water and almost all chemicals, and imparts a nice amber color that really warms-up pale woods like maple. The word "spar" implies a formulation suitable for outdoor use. This is usually slightly softer and more flexible to cope with temperature extremes, with UV-inhibitors to cope with direct sun. However, that doesn't mean it is not perfectly usable indoors. I suppose the term comes from the wooden 'spars' of sailing ships. Water-based 'polyurethanes' are not the same at all, they are grossly inferior. I typically use rattle-cans for smaller projects, as pictured. It is often possible to polish a 'flat' finish to a high shine, or scuff a gloss finish to an even satin with steel wool.

Oil based SPAR Urethane provides a durable UV protected clear finish to your projects. It can be used on both interior and exterior wood surfaces. It is not designed to be used on floors. Using the product is easy, once you get the top off – just spray the area to be protected. It requires three coats for maximum protection, and a can will cover about 15-20 sq. ft. The finish will dry to the touch in about two hours. It is an oil based product – providing good durability, but you will need mineral spirits for any clean up. This is a high gloss formula, and the finish has plenty of sheen. The finish provides water resistance to an outdoor wood project.

Behr Gloss Clear Oil-based Interior/exterior spar urethane wood sealer in the 11.5 aerosol can is a good product but heavily fumed so i would not recommend indoor use unless the area is very well Ventilated. The can has a spread rate of 15-20 sq ft. and needs to be cleaned up with mineral spirits. It also suggests you use 4 coats on untreated wood. with a 2 hr dry time between coats. One reason it has taken so long to write the review as it has to be at least 55 degrees outside to be able to use it. and you cannot use it in direct sun. But all in all it is convenient . And for rough surfaces like my bear it worked very well.

Using an aerosol spray is tricky, but this oil-based poly leaves a very nice glossy finish. It should be noted that the temperature requirements for this product is roughly 55 degrees (F) to 90 degrees (F). Since it's a spray, in my case, I had to use it outdoors, and it happens to be winter at the time of this review. Therefore, I needed to pick a time when it would be warm enough to spray. The poly coated my little wood stool easily, and after two coats I was really satisfied with the results. Before spraying, I lightly sanded the surface to prep it. It was finished many years ago with a water-based poly, but now have a coat of oil-based poly. It also takes roughly two hours to be dry enough for a second coat. Great product, but I gave it only four stars because of its natural temperature limitations when it could be used.

The top was so difficult to get off (screw driver in slot was nowhere near enough strength to remove it and only deformed the lid.) We finally had to cut it off. There was another device inside the lid that then had to be cut off. After we got to the spray nozzle all went well. It provided a nice even finish coat for our mantle over the fireplace. It dried as noted to be ready for a second coat.

This oil based spar urethane is great. It sprays out evenly and has good coverage. The can says to apply 3 coats and it takes 2 hours to dry completely. I am happy to say that it did not change the color of my natural bamboo one bit. It has a nice, soft sheen to it, leaving a beautiful finish. Very easy to use. Barely any smell. I am very pleased with the excellent results I can always count on from Behr. I love that it is indoor outdoor and I definitely recommend this wood sealer!

First you have to get the top off. As a senior with dexterity issues I had problems getting the top off. I followed the instructions on the top of the can; inserted a screwdriver and prid and only managed to split the plastic into several pieces. I now have no top so I'll be sure to store my opened can out of reach of children. The aerosol sprays well and it is fairly easy to control on vertical surfaces for no drips. On the horizontal the spray self-leveled which is a nice feature. Slow back and forth gives you nice coverage. It definitely takes a minimum of two coats so the 2 hour dry time between coats is a big benefit. The gloss sheen after two coats is not eye blinding glossy. The product is oil-based however I did not find the odor to be too intense. for small projects and project pieces with carving detail, this is the formula for you. For larger projects, a quart can and a brush or sprayer would make more sense.

The only problem I had with this product was opening it. Embossed in the cap are instructions to insert a screwdriver and push down. The cap simply bent when I did that, so I increased the pressure and the cap splintered. Now I had to peel the cap away, and I discovered an inner cap was part of the original cap. I needed a slip joint pliers to remove this, and in the effort the nozzle popped off and flew several feet away in my messy garage, but I was able to find and reattach it. The reason for the inner cap, I believe, was that the product has very strong fumes. It applies fine and easily.

This Gloss spray will be used for my picture frames and collectibles. There are two things that stand out to me about this spray sealer. One, it is labeled as indoor or outdoor, and the sprayer head is fantastic . A more even spray from a can has never been had. UV inhibitors slow the rate of fading when used outdoors. A two hour drying time, but when it's dry it is super protected. Water resistant also helps in areas where even humidity may be an issue.

I like using Spar urethane for my outdoors project, but today I needed it for a shop project. I wanted a shelf unit I need to hold my hand power tool protected. I also wanted to try out this spray. It was easy to use, sprayed on smooth and had great coverage. The rack in the pictures was totally covered with two coats, shelves have three coats. For an indoor shop project I figured that was enough. They recommend at least 4 coats for untreated wood. Final results was a nice smooth shinny finish. My wife loved and and started to look for a place in the house she could use one.

Covered evenly with no runs. Excellent high gloss finish.
