Once oxygen hits it after opening - it fades to brown FAST
Very disappointed by this product - the black color fades within a week or two, even the mulch that is in the shade has faded to a brown color. To the point where I thought I just spread it too thin and the old mulch was showing through. I bought more to lay down a thicker layer, which obviously didn’t help. The first picture was taken on July 13 right after the mulch was laid, you can see the dirt and old mulch on the edges, where I need to install garden fencing and then I will lay more bags of mulch to cover that edge up to the fencing. The bottom picture was taken July 28.

    Lost color with first rain.
It looked good when I applied it last night but the color washed out overnight with moderate rain. I will not be purchasing this product again. Fortunately I only purchased 2 bags to try it out before completely covering my beds with the product.

We're sorry to read about your disappointment with Earthgro By Scotts Black Mulch and appreciate your feedback.

For best results, it should be applied when rain is not expected for 24 48 hours and area should not be watered for 24 hours after application to allow the mulch the fully dry which helps to set the colorant. The loss of colorant is usually isolated to the top 1-2 inches of the mulch. We recommend raking the mulch to turn over the top 1-2 inches.

Beware: Product quality is inconsistent bag to bag
I purchased 35 bags of Scotts Earthgro Black mulch. 25 bags were nicely shredded & a nice color out of the bag. The other 10 bags were a surprise when I opened them. The mulch was roughly chopped chunks of wood - a very different texture from the other bags. I am very unhappy with the result - my flower beds look terrible because the mulch quality is so inconsistent from bag to bag. My recommendation is to open the bags before you buy them to ensure you go home with all the same style of mulch.

In extremely rare instances bags of product may be produced at two different plants. This can account for slight differences in color or composition texture. Different batches can also have varying textures and color based on the various materials available.

They are easy to pick up and put where you need to put them. I am a 100 lb women. So. They are colored well. They made my yard look nice. They definitely do not cover as much as you want, but really nice looking. I got the black color. Loved it. Thanks

        I’m done with Scotts
I bought close to 100 bags of black mulch to do client’s house and my own. After just two days once the mulch dried out in the sun, they lost all the color. They are basically grey now. And when I did my own lawn I got the same result. But when I did my own yard, it rain 5 hours later and they all turned grey also. Some of the pieces were varnish furnitures. I’m done using Scotts. Will spend little more money and get the real stuff from landscaping company from now on.

This is not the quality of product we intend to produce. Every effort is made to screen out debris, including larger or otherwise improper pieces of wood. It is possible that the screens were damaged and not noticed, allowing some debris into the bagged product.

One factor that can cause the color to fade prematurely is rain, especially around the time the mulch is spread. For best results, the mulch should be applied when rain is not expected for 24-48 hours and you should not water the area for 24 hours after applying to allow the mulch to fully dry, which helps to set the colorant.

          No color
After first rain the black color turned to drown. You can see non colored wood chips. I called Scott's and got a refund.

          Inconsistent at best
I purchased Scott's Earthgro black mulch on 2 separate occasions from Home Depot. One batch was very good and one batch VERY chunky. It would be nice if the mulch was more consistent in production.

TERRIBLE - COLOR FADES IN A FEW DAYS
Look at the comparison photo of the Black Vigaro. Scots turned brown, Vigaro stayed black. I want black so I have to do all the work over again. The worst part hauling 20 bags at time every time I go to town. I bought 90 bags on sale. Thats what they will refund. I have to now pay double to replace it plus another $79 delivery charge (which they will not reimburse for). Buy Vigario !

              Don't buy this brand!
This is the worst mulch I've bought in 20 years! Large sticks, shredded bark up to 9"long, rocks! Bought 45 bags . I wish I could bag it up and return it! Lesson learned!

Some small pieces of back and twigs are intentional components of our growing media. Most of our soils, especially potting mixes and garden soils, are made of composted forest products and contain very little, if any, soil. This provides high organic content and nutrients without the concern for soil compaction.

                Awful Smelly Moldy
I will never purchase this product again, I can’t even call it mulch. Bought ten bags and they are all a solid moldy clump that smells like manure. Bought it last year and color faded quickly as well as white moldy chips in it. Taking it all back today for a refund.

Odor is caused by decomposing natural material and is non toxic. We believe this is simply due to the wood beginning to breakdown or rot inside the enclosed bag. Once the mulch has been spread the odor should subside. Fungal mold spores including mushroom producing fungus are a natural part of soils and mulch. It just takes the right conditions for the spores to develop into a fungus or mold. We do not sterilize our growing media as microorganisms are an important component of growing media. The fungus mold only becomes a problem if there is an overgrowth. Overgrowth occurs when the soil or mulch is too wet. Keep in mind that mold and fungus on growing media or mulch will go away with sunlight and air circulation.

I have bought over 240 bags of this mulch. In one week, it fades and looks terrible. I’m done buying this product and will switch to rocks. Never again.

                      Lost color within 4 days
We applied the mulch around the bases of a few trees and in flower bed beside our stairs. Looked fantastic to start, but 4 days later we got light rain and a lot of the color washed out. It is now various shades of brown. Spend the extra few bucks on the good stuff. Don't waste money on this.

                          Color mismatch
This was our first and last time purchasing this product. I was really disappointed with a name like Scott’s that it had such poor quality. We purchased 100 bags and 30 of those bags were a different shade of brown. Not only did the color vary from bag to bag, put there were also rocks in some of the bags! See picture of color mismatch and huge rock found in one of the bags. Some of the mulch was brown like the color crayon, while other bags were more of a brown/black?

Inconsistent type and quality. See pictures.
We ordered one batch (the bag on the left in the picture) of Scotts Earthgro Black Mulch to cover a portion of our 600 SF of garden in front of our house. Then we ordered a second batch, 20 bags this time to finish the job, and it was A TOTALLY DIFFERENT AND INFERIOR PRODUCT. See the bag on the right in the picture. We're what you'd call "elderly." We have no sensible way to fix this without redoing the whole thing, and we just don't have the energy to do that.

                                      Color
Lost its color within 2 days of putting it down. We have had some rain but it shouldnt go from black to barely brown. Very disappointed. Between us and neighbors we did 40 bags and it was a lot of work and now it looks terrible

Mosquitos in the mulch I received.
I have received my 10 bags on 4/5/23. Ever since then, I have the great battle to fight with the mosquitos, from mosquito bits, to boil water, to clorox bleach, to vinegar, to mint, to Yellow Sticky Traps. There are so many still alive. It costed much more money and time than I could affort! So much regret to buy this mulch!!

Our soils & mulches are not treated to deter animals and insects as they are natural to the environment. Many insects breed in soils & mulches and animals such as chipmunks burrow in soils. Most of the insects that live in mulches are harmless.

Do not let this get wet! Very disappointed
I just switched from red to black mulch. I am very disappointed in the quality of the Scott's black mulch that i purchased. I bought it last week and layed it the same day. As the pictures will show it has already faded and turned color. The bag states it will keep its color all year long guaranteed. I imagine that only means if it doesn't rain.

                                          Poor quality dye
Dye runs out in the first rainstorm. You get what you pay for. The mulch on the left was put down a couple days ago, the mulch on the right was directly from the bag.

                                            Incredibly Moldy and decaying.
Basically all the bags had white and yellow mold. Hosed it all down and seems to have washed it all off. Still unacceptable.

Fungal mold spores including mushroom producing fungus are a natural part of soils It just takes the right conditions for the spores to develop into a fungus or mold. Our growing media products are not sterilized and may contain microorganism including fungus. In fact, fungus mold has been scientifically proven to improve the growth of plants by releasing nutrients from the organic material that growing media are typically lacking. The fungus mold only becomes a problem if there is an overgrowth. Overgrowth occurs when the soil mulch is too wet. The mold and fungus that grows on soils and mulch will not harm plants and is safe for people and pets to be around although as always, we recommend you use gloves when handling for soil that has not been used yet allow it to dry out on some newspaper outside before using. For soil that has already been used, allow the plants to dry out a bit between waterings. It will not hurt the plant to allow the soil to dry between waterings but will typically eliminate any mold fungus growth which needs the extra moisture. Keep in mind that mold and fungus on growing media or mulch will go away with sunlight and air circulation.
