Q:Is safe for dogs who like to chew?

Answer This Question

A:  Earthgro Black Wood Shredded Bagged Mulch is certified by the Mulch and Soil Council which guarantees that the mulch does not contain recycled lumber that has been treated with Chromated Copper Arsenate CCA. The raw materials used to make mulch colorants are made from naturally occurring colors found on the earth's surface. These colorants as well as the other ingredients in mulch are specially formulated to be nontoxic to plants and animals. We do NOT use cocoa which can be harmful to pets in our mulches.

Q:What products is this made of?
    by|Dec 14, 2023
    1 Answer
    Answer This Question

A:  The wood used in our colored mulches is natural forest products that are by-products of the timber industry. The materials include discarded branches, bark removed before boards or cut and potentially poorly cut boards that have to be discarded at the mill. Wood used in the mulch can include (but is not limited to): pine, fir, cedar, cypress, etc. specific wood used varies depending on what is available. Peanuts do not grow on trees (they grow under ground like potatoes) so there should not be any peanut or peanut residue in our mulches. However it could be bagged using the same machinery that bags our soils which contain compost (possibility of peanut residue in compost). Tree Nuts: While wood from nut trees (pecan, walnut, almond, etc) is not commonly used in mulch we cannot guarantee the mulch is free from tree nut wood especially in areas where nut trees are common.

This covered more area than I expected which was a nice surprise. Definitely wearing gloves to spread it next time, but my hands didn't stain just took some significant scrubbing.

Purchased 150 bags. 27 of them had white fungus growing on them. Around 8 had bits of garbage (bottle caps, plastic, tubing, etc.) Many were half full of sawdust and too much moisture. Overall the product was good. But yeah, don't like paying for dust.

Once oxygen hits it after opening - it fades to brown FAST
Very disappointed by this product - the black color fades within a week or two, even the mulch that is in the shade has faded to a brown color. To the point where I thought I just spread it too thin and the old mulch was showing through. I bought more to lay down a thicker layer, which obviously didn’t help. The first picture was taken on July 13 right after the mulch was laid, you can see the dirt and old mulch on the edges, where I need to install garden fencing and then I will lay more bags of mulch to cover that edge up to the fencing. The bottom picture was taken July 28.

            Lost color with first rain.
It looked good when I applied it last night but the color washed out overnight with moderate rain. I will not be purchasing this product again. Fortunately I only purchased 2 bags to try it out before completely covering my beds with the product.

We're sorry to read about your disappointment with Earthgro By Scotts Black Mulch and appreciate your feedback.

For best results, it should be applied when rain is not expected for 24 48 hours and area should not be watered for 24 hours after application to allow the mulch the fully dry which helps to set the colorant. The loss of colorant is usually isolated to the top 1-2 inches of the mulch. We recommend raking the mulch to turn over the top 1-2 inches.

Beware: Product quality is inconsistent bag to bag
I purchased 35 bags of Scotts Earthgro Black mulch. 25 bags were nicely shredded & a nice color out of the bag. The other 10 bags were a surprise when I opened them. The mulch was roughly chopped chunks of wood - a very different texture from the other bags. I am very unhappy with the result - my flower beds look terrible because the mulch quality is so inconsistent from bag to bag. My recommendation is to open the bags before you buy them to ensure you go home with all the same style of mulch.

In extremely rare instances bags of product may be produced at two different plants. This can account for slight differences in color or composition texture. Different batches can also have varying textures and color based on the various materials available.

They are easy to pick up and put where you need to put them. I am a 100 lb women. So. They are colored well. They made my yard look nice. They definitely do not cover as much as you want, but really nice looking. I got the black color. Loved it. Thanks

                I’m done with Scotts
I bought close to 100 bags of black mulch to do client’s house and my own. After just two days once the mulch dried out in the sun, they lost all the color. They are basically grey now. And when I did my own lawn I got the same result. But when I did my own yard, it rain 5 hours later and they all turned grey also. Some of the pieces were varnish furnitures. I’m done using Scotts. Will spend little more money and get the real stuff from landscaping company from now on.

This is not the quality of product we intend to produce. Every effort is made to screen out debris, including larger or otherwise improper pieces of wood. It is possible that the screens were damaged and not noticed, allowing some debris into the bagged product.

One factor that can cause the color to fade prematurely is rain, especially around the time the mulch is spread. For best results, the mulch should be applied when rain is not expected for 24-48 hours and you should not water the area for 24 hours after applying to allow the mulch to fully dry, which helps to set the colorant.
