The Fluidmaster 400A Toilet Fill Valve is the de facto, industry standard ballcock replacement. I have been using them for at least 35 years. Since they are the very best solution for all standard toilet tanks, I am frankly surprised that standard ballcocks (with floats) are even in use any longer, particularly given that Fluidmaster flush valves are so far superior to ballcocks, and they have been sold since the late 1950’s. The Fluidmaster valve has undergone some changes over time, but essentially remains the same excellent, reliable solution that they have always been. Installing Fluidmaster 400 fill valves is really a very simple and straightforward process, and the printed instructions are definitive and comprehensive. If you can use a very few simple hand-tools, you really don’t need to pay a plumbers expensive service visit charges and marked-up charges for the part (and this most certainly also applies to flapper valve replacement, as well). I have always found the Fluidmaster fill valve to be very reliable, and long-lasting; typically for several years, or more. (How frequently the fill valve might need to be replaced is dependent upon the water quality/hardness/chlorination level, as well as the volume of use, since ultimately the rubber seal and the water passage will be affected. I’m going to share a little “secret” that every service plumber I know employs when replacing an old Fluidmaster fill valve with a new one. I have seen many plumbers leave the threaded shank in place, raise the lock-ring and pull off the main valve body and then install the replacement valve body (top section) in the reverse process. Replacements are done in just that manner every day. In doing so, after the water stop-valve is closed and the toilet is flushed to remove most of the water, it is unnecessary to bail out the remaining water since the threaded shank is not being removed. Several steps in the replacement process, including disconnecting the water supply line and removing and replacing the threaded shank section are thereby avoided. I always find it useful to quickly flush out the water supply line and new toilet valve when installing new valves (and this also applies to replacing sink/shower plumbing cartridges, as well). Just twist off the top cap, hold an inverted cup over the flush valve while briefly, partially opening the water-stop valve (just enough to flow enough water to flush the pipe and valve body – not with full pressure). This will clear any particulate debris prior to it potentially clogging the flush valve. I also prefer to purchase the Fluidmaster 400A fill valves in the 3-Pack, which is more economical and a good value.

Quick to hook up and easiest fix I've ever done

Being a plumber, I have used these Fluidmaster 400A Fill Valve for over 30 years! Minor changes have been made over the years have only made it better and easier to install. I recommend this product for professionals and homeowners alike as it is extremely easy to install, inexpensive and will last for decades! The only wearable part is a rubber washer that will last for years and years without needing replacement but can be replaced without replacing the entire valve. Would give it six stars if it was possible.

I've installed 30-50 Fluidmaster fill valves in my apartments over the last ten years. So when my own home's toilet keep running, I opened the contractor's pack I keep handy for apartment repairs and threw one in. 3 months later, the toilet is running again. I install the second fill valve, and disassembled the 1st fill valve to check for small rocks or? in the valve shut off. Come to find out, the stainless steel pin that pushes on the rubber diaphragm to shut the water off poked through the diaphragm and caused the fill valve not to shut off. See photo I don't know if it's just these contractor's pack or poor quality parts. I don't need to do repairs over and over, so I installed a different brand of fill valves.

Is very easy to install on the tank, but it only tends to last about 3 to 5 years. I wish we don't have to replace this as often.

Bought a 3-pack, right after installation two out of three are leaking from the top when closed. I understand that you get what you pay for but even at this price I don’t recommend this product.
