Terrible product
I spent more time cursing this product than applying it. It is so thin that it splatters everywhere. First coat with a stain pad, next with a roller. Both coats it cannot be applied evenly. I'm going to end up replacing the stain with either paint or the actual boards themselves. I would give this product a 0 if I could.

Oh no, not something we like to hear, Tony. RockSolid Composite Deck Refresh is designed for application to properly prepped wood capped composite wood decks. Prior to application, a splash text must be conducted to confirm water absorption before applying this product. Give us a call at 800-373-6333 so we can hear more about your application and try to make things right.

Had an old trex deck surface that was deteriorated significantly, we wanted to refresh the look without having to replace all the deck boards. This product went on very thin but absorbed into the decking, it ultimately took about three to four coats but the deck looks like new. Very satisfied with the product so far, we'll see how it holds up over the winter.

    Product was Horrible
I read all the reviews and wanted this to work. Followed all the instructions. Was even willing to deal with a brownish color even though it was supposed to be grey. Product goes on like water. Applied with a Behr stain sponge. Product soaked up into the deck. I went through 8 cans. Only been 3 months since application and color is blotchy and faded. See pics. I plan to call the customer service number in the other reviews. I would avoid this product.

      Beware of color
We ordered the “Brown Tone” as we didn’t want and orange/red tones. Turned out “Orange Tone”!! So disappointed!! And, you will DEFINITELY need 2 coats, DOUBLE UP on your stain! $$$ Doubly disappointing!!

        Inaccurate Color
Do not believe the deck color that is shown on the can. The after decking photo and the Color Name Chip both are shown as a nice, rich BROWN. That is wrong. The actual color when painted on the composite deck is "Teracote", an orange tone. Not Brown at all. The color sample as shown with the can is more reflective of what it is when painted. You will be sorry. Once dry, the color does not deepen to brown. It stays an orange tint.

Brought new life to an old composite deck
My pool deck had become extremely faded from chlorine and the sun - I didn’t think anything would bring it back to life. This product really works. Only issue, similar to others, is that “brown” is a wide range of colors and what was originally a dark brown deck is now more cedar - but anything is better than what it had turned into. Simple to apply with the stain pad (I did two coats). Not slippery and looks great!

My original composite deck color was a silver-gray. The gray “deck-refresh” was more of a brownish-gray. While the overall durability was very good, it took three coats (rather than claimed single-coat) to get satisfactory coverage. An additional coat in year two improved the look.

                Worst Deck Coating Ever
After spending many hours prepping and staining my deck exactly how the directions indicated Im extremely unsatisfied. The product completly failed as soon as the snow melted off my deck. I waited for an extended period of dry weather, cleaned the deck with cleaner they recommended, primed the deck with their primer and then stained the deck. It looked great all fall but as soon as the snow melted in the Northeast my entire deck started to buble and peal. I contacted customer service and they quickly sent me a refund check for all the products i putchased. This doesn’t change the fact that now i need to do the entire deck over again. DO NOT BUY this product.

                  Excellent !
I used this cedar colored stain on my non-composite deck which was very old and hadn't been given care for years. The old stain was pretty much gone from the floor deck boards. I power washed as much as I could to rid the railings of old redwood color stain and followed up with a bleach solution which I let sit awhile (there was also green areas I noticed, maybe fungus I'd guess) . Hopefully the bleach will eradicate any fungus and it also brightened up the wood somewhat. When applying the Rocksolid the old wood just sucked it right in, instead of just sitting on top of the wood it penetrated deep. It goes on extremely easily and no problem with end spots if you take a break mid board and restart later. It just blends together where you restart, no problem. It has been about a month since staining and it looks great yet. When it rains the water beads up and evaporates with the wind. So far I'm a sold customer and love my old deck again!

                    Refreshing a gray composit deck
I just painted it (June 26, 2020) on steps and a back deck, saw beading up after a rain, and it does look better than the faded gray that has taken a beating from the sun. Bummed I have to buy 2 gal at a time. It is DEFINITELY not one coat coverage, it's like water. It is also taupe colored comparted to the composite gray, but it dries a darker gray color so it looked better. Found better application with an old wide bristled paint brush than a roller. The roller cause a foam and more absorbed in the roll than went on the deck.

Grey Color not grey for beige
It was easy to go on but changed the color of my check completely which I did not want. I have now purchased 3 cans as the grey from my previous colored check it coming through my now beige deck. I was not planning on staining my upper deck but will now need to do the colors match. I wish it was the color on the can.

Thank you for your feedback! Please keep in mind, Rust-Oleum RockSolid Composite Deck Refresh is intended to refresh the color of composite decking, so the tone closest to the original color needs to be applied. This product is not intended to change existing colors. If wanting to change the color, we recommend Rust-Oleum RockSolid 2X Solid Stain instead, which can be used on most composite decking.

I am writing this review to address the main concern people seem to have with this product - its color. I was a little apprehensive to purchase the brown tone after people complained that it is too orange. As you can see in the attached photo, the color is more like a rusty brown when dry. It does appear a little orange when you apply it, but dries to a very satisfying darker tone. I applied it to my 10 year old original Trex saddle color railings and am very pleased with the results. Not only does the deck look new again but the surface texture of the decking is much smoother to touch and walk on. I used the same product in gray for the decking, also with great results. I applied 2 coats with a brush which eliminated any streaks that I saw after the first coat. If your decking is as old as mine, the first coat quickly soaks into the decking. The second coat, however, goes on very evenly and creates a solid outer layer of protection. One word of advice - use a bristle brush to apply it, not a foam brush. I tried a foam brush at first and it was very messy given the consistency of the product is like water. Using a bristle brush eliminated that problem and provided very even coats. Don't hesitate to use this product if your composite decking is faded, it works fantastic!

I have been looking for a product to restore some old grey composite decking that I had sitting around and was delighted to find the rustoleum rocksolid composite deck coating with a 3 yr guarantee. I followed the deck preparation cleaning steps to the tee using the rustoleum products suggested and even performed the "water test." My first concern arose when I opened the brown tone deck coating gallon can and stirred. I was alarmed at how orange it was so I decided to do a test piece for coloration purposes. Thank goodness I did because as you can see by the pictures the color is FAR from the dark rich brown picture on the can or as the one coat application "brown tone" color choice implies. I even tried applying a second coat on the right side of the piece for an epic fail. Very disappointed and left searching again for a composite decking paint/stain that is a dark rich brown color.

Not for changing deck color. Minimal pigment base. Wanting to refresh my deck's color to a lighter shade, I obtained this coating. My first impression of the coating was that it had a very watery consistency instead of a being full bodied like a latex stain. My concern was justified when I put the product to a test PRIOR to using it on my dark colored deck. One test coat of the lighter colored product on a darker colored surface was dismal. It barely made any color change at all. I just wish the web site product description had indicated that the existing deck color must match the deck coating color and that it could not be used to change deck color!

Thin enough for a sprayer, this has more of an rusty orange tint to it rather than a redwood color. It does have an odor so a mask would be in order. Only after four coats was there a visible difference in color. It dries fast and did not have any clumps in the bottom of the can. I was able to stir it with a simple stick so a paint mixer is not needed.

Gray Composite Deck Coating Having had to replace a few decking boards up in Vermont because of rot, I have replaced them using composite wood and now I am going to replace the whole deck and in doing so, protection against the harsh elements of the winters is paramount. This is the reason I chose this. I have teak boarding as well as some oak composite wood used as fencing. The fencing was particularly faded and was somewhat concerned what this gray would look like on the faded oak composite. But surprise surprise as the finish, once dry looks like new fencing. I then tried a covering on the teak composite with the same good results with only a small tinge of gray (see photos). The paint itself looks like a gray water upon opening the can despite stirring it vigorously and it does not feel like paint at all when brushing it on the boards. Yet when completely dry after a 24-hour time lapse it shows the water I hosed on them collecting in beads before running off in the horizontal position. Very impressive and adds to the claim of never wet. Very impressive. Going back to the time it takes to dry completely, I did leave a few boards outside in the sun and after 5 hours I did walk across them with no sign of stickiness.

The Rust-Oleum brown tone composite deck coating is an excellent product and I definitely recommend it for it's durability, water repelling properties and the ease with which it goes on the deck. My deck is pretty worn and the previous stain didn't hold up very well, but the Rust-Oleum deck coating really did a good job covering bare and faded spots. I also used the Rust-Oleum spot and stain removed and the deck wash, and both do an exceptional job for prepping the deck for the stain. It rained hard last night and the water really beaded up and will protect the finish. I'm impressed!
