I tried this for two fertilizer applications and both left visible green streaks. I did lower rate of application and walked at faster pace for second application, that only marginally improved it. May be the unit I have is defective as I have read reviews where it works flawlessly for some but others have similar issues as I do.

      DO NOT BUY
This is the biggest piece of garbage ever made. I used it once and the entire middle of it just drops fertilizer straight down leaving a 6-8” wide strip of burnt out/dead grass. Today I will be putting top soil over my lawn and seeding the entire “strip”

          SCOTTS RUINED MY LAWN
I purchased these grass seeds 6-8 weeks ago and applied them to a clean slate area where I had previously killed the grass and weeds in preparation to start fresh. This is a new construction home and there was minimum grass or weeds as it was predominantly hard clay-like dirt filled with pea gravel. I added new dirt from a landscape company, followed the instructions on the seed bag, watered day and night and the end result is entirely crab grass. Being new to yard work I did believe from the beginning that it did not appear to be grass and began to research online only to find out that although green and fluffy, the entire side of my home is crab grass in addition to the few places where I added the seeds to fill in thinning high traffic areas on my front lawn. I am very sad, disgusted and disappointed as a lot of care, water and time went into this project and now I do not even know what to do...there are too many to pull so it appears I will need to completely start from scratch. I planned to have an Open House in the yard for my 2020 high school graduate (who was not able to have prom or a graduation) in the yard to allow social distancing but under these circumstance I will need to find an alternative. Very Disappointed!!

Taconta, we apologize for this experience with our Scotts Turf Builder Grass Seed Sun and Shade Mix. There are approximately 10,000 weed seeds per 1 cubic foot of native soil. Our WaterSmart PLUS Grass Seed is harvested in June/July, well before the time of crabgrass maturity which occurs during late summer when it sets seed. We want you to be confident in our products. For this reason, we offer a product guarantee to our consumers. At your earliest convenience, please call 877-220-3089 for assistance. When calling, please refer to this review. Scotts

              FIRST TIMER
Plenty of work prior to opening bag. I did my research and created my own method. Til, heavy rake rocks, soil, tilled clumps of cheapest soil, grated or flattened area, then seeded and used Scotts starter fert. The results speak for themselves. Ive now done huge areas small areas it doesnt matter. Eastern Pennsylvania spots that are direcr sunlight and some that are mostly shade this product worked my lawn could have the eagles practice on it Only lets me add on picture so i guess its finished product after 2nd cut. But the befores are straight dirt

                Will leave fertilizer stripes
I saw all of the negatives reviews but still decided to give it a try. Bad idea. Like everyone else has said, fertilizer gets trapped in the wheels and WILL leave stripes in your lawn. I thought if i walked at a faster pace it might prevent it from happening, but I was wrong. Will be returning mine to buy a better quality spreader.

Used the spreader probably 10x on a half acre and haven’t owned for more than a year. The plastic piece connecting spreader to the spinner broke.

I ignored the comments of others - and now find myself with a damaged lawn. As written by others - the fertilizer gets caught in the wheels and drops down in a line. You'll then see the lines appear in the lawn the width of the wheels. Since others are of a similar design - I may try the 'fix' of using a spray foam to fill the wheels to see if that solves the issue. As of now - cannot recommend this spreader (surprising since my previous SpeedyGreen spreader did not have any issues). Note: the photo shows what happens when I had to cross over my driveway (this amount feel out of the wheels).

Drops a narrow strip of fertilizer
I agree with several other 1-star reviewers: this thing has a fatal design flaw. I have clear stripes on my lawn because this "broadcast" spreader didn't broadcast. The spinning plate is located BETWEEN the wheels, so most of the fertilizer hits the wheels and drops down into a narrow strip. Photos show the result of applying with 5' spacing.

Do Not Buy - Will leave streaks/stripes in your lawn
This Scotts EdgeGuard Mini spreader and its bigger model will leave streaks on your lawn. That is because the impeller part which throws the fertilizer is situated ‘below’ the big plastic wheels, so when the fertilizer is being thrown, fertilizer ends up hitting the wheels and dropping right under. Essentially, this broadcast spreader becomes a ‘drop spreader’ between the two wheels, which leads to streaks or stripes in your lawn from that area right below the spreader being over-fertilized. This also has the potential to burn your grass. It is a terrible design flaw, and a design flaw which Scotts refuses to address or fix for over a decade. Fixing this is simple and inexpensive. All Scotts has to do is raise the impeller to be above the wheels. So, I don’t know why for ten years Scotts has done nothing about this. If you look at the negative reviews, most speak of this problem. As a long-time The Home Depot customer, I ask The Home Depot to require Scotts to address this design issue. No business should be selling a faulty product to their customers, because ultimately, they themselves share a blame, especially a problem that has existed for over a decade. Scotts has fixed this design issue only for their ‘Elite’ model by raising the impeller height above the wheels, but that spreader costs 3x as much. I have attached a picture of the Scotts EdgeGuard Mini being used in the driveway showing how it drops extra material in the center between the two wheels.

We apologize for your distress regarding Scotts Turf Builder EdgeGuard Mini Broadcast Spreader. The Spreader width is 5 feet and to avoid streaks, slightly overlap each spreading pattern by approximately 1 1/2 feet. This process will ensure even distribution. We want you to be confident in our products; therefore, we offer a product guarantee. To receive more details about this, please contact us at 877-220-3089 and refer to your review when calling. Above The Wheels
After applying Scotts step one at end of March you could see where I walked with it, had darker green stripes in my yard. After using Scotts weed and feed X2 in the beginning of May on wet grass the inside of both wheel were packed with the product. Does not spread out to the sides evenly due to the wheel deflect a lot of it, tossing disc should be above the wheels like other brands. Now I see why others are complaining about burn lines in their yards, to much falling out of the wheels. It's only good for edges or borders. I'll have to get a different brand to finish the job. Hope I don't get burn marks.

For a person looking into lawn care they will need a serviceable seed spreader. Now truthfully the price and value leave room to be dedired. Very good product quality. I recommend the scott's mini spreader.

                                Causes striping in yard
Bad design imo. The spreader and hopper sit too low compared to the wheels, so the granules discharged from the side hit the inside of the wheel and drops straight down. It’s sad that it took me that long to figure out it was causing the massive stripes in my yard. I would return if I still had a receipt and it wasn’t a year later. I first thought it was the edge guard, but it’s not. I will be buying a different brand before I fertilize again and pay attention to it’s design. My first and previous Scott’s spreader lasted 15 years.

                                  Spreading seed for new lawn
Used this spreader to distribute lawn seed. Not over seeding, but new lawn. Spreads very poorly. I have thick lines of grass seed. Not sure why. Seems the grass seed gets spun into the back of the spreader/guard and the seed drops in a thicker 4"-5" line. Somewhat disappointing.

Im embarrassed with the way my lawn looks and getting a lot of comments and questions from my neighbors! I think I will put up some goal posts to make it look like i intentionally wanted it this way. Spreader has a backslash to prevent fertilizer from hitting me. Problem is it does not spread at 360 Degrees but only in the front of the spreader. The fertilizer that hits the backslash drops straight down to the lawn and now I have what looks like a picture frame.

This spreader is supposed to spread the fertilizer over an area about 5 ft wide but in reality, it drops everything on one line, exactly where you walk (about 1 ft wide). You can see this in below picture. The grass is green exactly where I walked up and down our backyard but not in the areas in between. This proves that the Scotts fertilizer is working well because where it has been applied the grass is much greener than in other areas. But it also proves that the Scotts spreader is not working as it should ...

Set at the called for setting on the fertilizer bag the spreader applied roughly twice the amount expected. Since I use a non-burning fertilizer (Milorganite) it won't really hurt anything other than the fact it was wasted. From now on I plan to determine the amount of fertilizer needed and lower the spreader setting quite a bit. I'd rather make more than one pass than waste fertilizer.

I love this stuff... I've used it in several spots in my yard where the ground was barren and dry and other seeds have failed miserably. But after trying this seed with proper soil preparation (loosing and thatching the soil) I have yet to fail. Wish it was a little less costly, but you truly get what you pay for. Would Highly Reccomend!!! Could never get grass to grow in my backyard due to several large trees, much shade, with a little evening sun and look what happened in just seven days. Put down some fresh soil and watered twice a day.

                                              Terrible Spreader Ruined my lawn
Using Scotts fertilizer on the correct setting, this spreader created STRIPES on my lawn which lasted for weeks. The spinning disk is between the wheels, not above, which causes the fertilizer to "spread" only over a 2 foot wide. Scotts should recall this item

Time will tell but so far it is doing great. Covered with a 1/4" of top soil and watered daily, grass sprouted within 5 days and was 2" tall a week after that. It has been 16 days now and it looks great! We are avoiding walking on it as the shoots are still very delicate. I am hoping that in another month it will be going strong.

I am SO happy with how this grass seed performed! I have used it to fill in whole spaces that were dirt as well as overseed. I did put a bit of fertilizer down the week after I laid the seed. I also sprinkled peat moss to help bring nutrients to the old soil. Grass grown in SE Michigan.

Total dirt (lousy dirt). Roughed it up and spread the seed. Light rough after and straw. 8 weeks. Been fighing this for years with terrible advice
