Design Flaw (Fix): After using the Scotts Turf Builder Mini Broadcast Spreader to distribute Scotts Turf Builder Bonus S Weed & Feed, I noticed several 3’ to 4’ straight line “burn marks” in different areas on my lawn last Spring. Apparently, fertilizer gets packed inside the wheel which eventually dumps it out in a line. If the molded plastic wheels did not have interior spokes, the granules wouldn’t accumulate. I bought two 56-cent Frisbees, drilled center holes in them, and fastened each as inside “hub caps.” I used a threaded rod through the axle with nuts to secure the wheels. Problem solved. This could be fixed with no-spoke wheels.

    The best
[This review was collected as part of a promotion.] I can’t believe how easy this is to use. They take all the guess work out of the spreading. It took less then one minute to assemble it from the box. I have only used this for turf builder, but I’m sure it will work for salt as swell. Great proud.

      Incredibly accurate
[This review was collected as part of a promotion.] I used the spreader to fertilize and seed my lawn this spring. The ease and accuracy of the amount applied by the spreader was very impressive! My lawn never looked so green. My neighbors all ask what my secret is and I tell them Scott’s!

        Good product
[This review was collected as part of a promotion.] This spreader is has a lot of adjustment for a small spreader. It is light and easy to use. Works very well for smaller areas. Its a good product. It will get used a lot and is small enough for my wife to use. Thanks for such a good product.

          Easy to use!
[This review was collected as part of a promotion.] We have used the hand held spreader for years, we are older and this is just terrific easy to put together and use, it spreads so easily and the wheels allow for easy maneuvering and getting into all the curved areas of our yard. We love it!

We are sorry to hear of your experience with Scotts Turf Builder Sun and Shade Grass Seed. Temperature plays a critical role in seedling germination. Soil temperatures for warm season grass seed must be around 70° F for seed to germinate. Small size does big work!
[This review was collected as part of a promotion.] I unboxed my new Scotts® Turf Builder® Edgeguard® Mini Broadcast Spreader when it arrived. I loosened the handle bolts and moved the upper part of the handle into place. The handle bolts and wing nuts tightened up with no problem. I took the grass seed I wanted to spread and poured a small amount into the hopper expecting it to work like other small spreaders; problematic. To my surprise this little spreader is a beast. Even though I have about 2 acres of lawn area total it works like a champ. I especially like the edge guard feature around our ornamental gardens. This is one tough little workhorse. A big thumbs up from this happy homeowner!

              Nice Size for small spaces
[This review was collected as part of a promotion.] I Received a Free Sample of this Product from the Manufacturer....It is a Nice Compact size for small areas, Easy to set dial. It is a bit wobbly when poring seed into it so had to have it on solid ground, I had it on cement. The Edgeguard works pretty good, except it does shoot some of the seeds in that area where they are not supose to go when edgeguard is on. It does disperse the seeds well, and is easy to push around the yard. Yes, I would recommend this if you have a small area to seed.

                Perfect Spreader for Small Yards
I bought this spreader several months ago. It works just as advertised. I ALWAYS use ONLY Scotts Fertilizer! In the past, I would try and 'cheat' by purchasing a less expensive fertilizer ... there would be clumps that would cause the spreader wheel to 'stall' and skip along the grass. This spreader does NOT do that if you use Scotts!!! And, just in case your product laid around too long and has lumps, .... break them up by hand (wear gloves) and this spreader will perform for you. I purchased the Scotts Lawn Plan through the Scotts Lawn App.... they sent all the fertilizer I needed for the whole year... the app tells me when to apply with my Mini Broadcast Spreader. I installed an irrigation system last fall which cut in my already green and plush lawn. Using Scott's products has already filled in most of the trench lines.

Does not accurately dispense fertilizer. I set the dial on the spreader to the rate recommended on the bag of Scotts fertilizer. But after applying product to my 15,000 Sq Ft lot, I still had half of a 15,000 Sq Ft bag of fertilizer. Also, fertilizer collects on the insides of the wheel when the grass is wet. Then clumps of fertilizer fall off the wheel onto the lawn. The whole thing is very flimsy.

Junk...horrible design. Do not buy. If you are over 5’8” the handle height will be very uncomfortable while pushing. The area where you pour fertilizer doesn’t have sides steep enough when the fertilizer gets lower which requires one to rock the spreader left to right to shake the fertilizer to the middle so it will go out the opening. Last and most ridiculous...as others have said this spreads the fertilizer heavy right under the unit. I fertilized just 3 days ago and now I have stripes in my yard which trace my exact path as I fertilized. Whoever at Scott’s that made the call to sell and market this product should first be required to actually use this product for their own yard so they can enjoy matching zebra stripes and secondly be released because they are asleep at the wheel. What a joke.

The design of this product is fundamentally flawed. You can probably see on the picture that the insides of the wheels are hollow (recessed with plastic spokes, essentially). This works fine for application on DRY grass, but when I apply on MOIST or WET grass, the product gets caught in the inside part of the right wheel. This wastes the expensive product, and also created problems on my lawn. The last time I used the spreader to put down weed and feed, I ended up with 'stripes' on my lawn - places where the concentrated product on the right wheel came in contact with the grass and basically killed it. I followed the instructions (applied on MOIST grass), so I don't believe that this was my fault. Taking away the 'stripes', the fact that the product gets caught inside the wheels is very poor. Fertilizer is expensive, and I don't want to find clumps of it stuck to the spreader.

Pretty amazing product. After reading reviews, I ended up doubling the amount of seed recommended to be put down (I used 60 lbs on roughly 6000 sq ft). Other than that I followed the instructions to a T. I found it to be extremely durable. I live in upstate NY and the weather is always unpredictable. The day after I planted it, we got 3.5 inches of rain and the lawn sat underwater for a day or two. A few days later, it snowed just under an inch unexpectedly and stayed cold for a couple days. After that, I had given up on it and was going to lay more seed but my buddy who used it before encouraged me to wait. Sure enough, two weeks after I planted it, it started to pop up and came in nice and thick. It took a little longer than described but considering the weather, I wasn't upset!

Good grass seed, BUT, you need to wait until your soil temps are at a steady MINIMUM of 65 degrees F before putting it down. Then, just water it at least twice per day and keep it lightly wet for around two weeks or so. If you ever let it dry out when it's hot out before it sprouts, it could die, so be SURE to keep it wet until sprouting. Check soil temps right here: http://www.greencastonline.com/tools/soil-temperature

Seedlings will begin to emerge in 5-10 days under ideal conditions. This is not when all of the seed will germinate just when the grass will first start coming up. Great mini spreader! I was skeptical about the small size for my acre of lawn. I thought I'd have to buy the more expensive larger spreader. But this mini one is very efficient in spreading out the weed and seed. And the spreader is very easy to use! I set the dispenser dial to the setting recommended on the weed and feed package. Then I was skeptical...again...wondering if the spreader was distributing enough product to kill the weeds and help the grass grow. Well, I ran out of product before I could finish. But I can clearly see where I left off, two weeks after application. The late-summer dandelions are gone on the treated side! Not plush yet, but it's doing better! Nothing I dislike about it as a miniature and inexpensive spreader. I wasn't sure what to expect, but I am definitely pleased.

Drops a significantly heavier trail in the center, so much so that it leaves me with darker, thicker stripes in my yard marking the path where I wheeled it. I tried increasing flow on my second attempt at spreading fertilizer 6 weeks after the first. Same striping (see photo), but with the heavier setting (5), I added a couple burn stripes here and there.

This seed has had an uphill battle from the beginning - there was powdered concrete and contractor sand in location I could not get rid of regardless of screen or tilling. So we are still waiting. There are also 3 other types of seeds in there and the conditions are alkaline (not good) I watch, baby, fiddle, etc like old mother hen in there. Will not use lawn mower on her, only shears and should wait until next year. I am out there at 5:00 am checking progress. Insanity, I guess.

We are sorry that you are unhappy with Scotts Turf Builder Sun & Shade Mix. Grass seeds emerge when continuous warmth and moisture is provided. It is important to be conscious of applying herbicides prior to beginning a seeding project because weed controls prevent seeds from germinating. My lawn died and didn't come back this spring, not sure why. After learning the hard way last year where dropping this seed and casual watering resulted in no success to repair brown patches, this year, I took the time to rough-rake the entire yard to loosen the topping and pull up a lot of the dead grass thatch. Next, I spread the seed per the directions for a new lawn, and covered with a light layer (1/8" or so) of Scotts Lawn Builder top soil, I also used Scotts New Lawn Starter Fertilizer. You have to water this seed every day, or it will not germinate, and the seed should be mixed into the top layer of loosened soil so the wet soil keeps the seeds damp. Just stay consistent with watering, and it should germinate in a week or two. In the picture where the grass is dense, it was fairly heavily seeded at the beginning of the season when I thought the rest of the lawn would bounce back. That seed has been growing for a little over a month now, and looking great. The brown areas I raked up and seeded about a week before the photo was taken, in the other photo you can just see the beginnings of a few blades of grass growing, it has since continued to fill in gradually. Only reason for 4 stars instead of 5 is that this seed is expensive, and it's too easy for it to fail. If you're on your game with watering, and you've prepped the soil so the seeds are just sitting on top of hard dirt, it should work. As weird looking as the blue seeds are, it's really helpful to let you see where it's still exposed versus after you've sufficiently covered it with top soil. If the coating is really helping to retain water, that's a plus, because even with that coating, you have to water a lot to get it to germinate. As long as it continues to grow and fill in, it will have met my expectations, so time will tell.

READ THIS IF YOU WANT A GRASS SEED TO WORK It worked for me contrary to other reviews probably because of good preparation. My wife told me we were in zone 6 (New York) so I looked around and read stuff about grass that grows in our zone and when to start seeding. April turns out to be the best time here. I found out that this one works in zone 6 and because our lawn has a lot of shade. This is what i did. 1. Rented a Klassen Power Rake from HD and dethatched our lawn and manual raked it and did it twice. 2. Sowed the seeds evenly with a handheld spreader... be generous. 3. Added a thin layer of Peat Moss by hand. You can also rent a peat moss spreader if you want. 4. Installed "Orbit 1-hose faucet timer" with "Y Shut-Off 2-Way Metal Hose Connector" attached to two hose and two "Melnor Oscillating Sprinker". I set the timer to run the faucet at 1pm as that would probably be the driest time of the day and you can only set Orbit faucet time once a day. There are times that i would run the sprinkler manually once or twice a day early morning and late afternoon if the lawn looks dry. If its raining turn off the timer. Goodluck!
