Finally a handheld spreader that doesn't suck!
Handheld spreaders are important to have around even if you have a bigger spreader. They're good for repairing patches of dead lawn, evenly spreading fertilizer on garden beds and ice melt products on walkways. They all have problems but you learn to live with them because... well... what are you gonna do? It's not like there were better handheld options. Until now at least. One of the big problems is the granules of whatever you're spreading can get stuck and make it impossible to turn the crank by hand. This is especially bad with ice. I tried this new Scotts Wizz battery powered hand held sprayer with grass seed, organic fertilizers and even ice melt and it didn't jam up. One of the other things I don't like about traditional handheld spreaders is that you need to hold them up close to your face at about chest level because you need two hands to operate them. One to hold it and one to crank with. I wouldn't feel comfortable walking forward as I'm generating a cloud of synthetic fertilizer and pesticides in front of me. I use organic fertilizers but I still don't want to breath any dust or debris from that either. The Wizz can be operated with one hand which allows you to keep it down and to the side of your leg below your waist and away from your face. Even with the Wizz it's a little difficult to get as even coverage as you get with a push style spreader since you need to walk at a consistent pace and you don't have the marks left by the wheels as a guide. It's something you can work around though as long as you can be as consistent as possible. What I usually try to do is determine how many lbs of fertilizer I need for a given area, weight it out right in the spreader using a postage scale, set the spreader at a lower than recommended setting (usually about half) and then make 2 or more passes, preferably in different directions, until the hopper is empty. I do the same with my push spreader as well. That's yeilded very consistent coverage for me. The Wizz has a large capacity and is very easy to use. It's good for small lawns if you don't want to take up space with a larger spreader and good for patching small areas in larger lawns. The EdgeGuard feature is really nice to help keep grass seed and fertilizer out of the walkways and salt out of the lawn in the winter. I'm surprised how much I like it.

Clogs
Last year worked well no clogging. This year clogs when it’s full and required me to shake it which is not good when applying pretty much anything.

Battery replacement must be an easy way to do it. 4 screws must be unscrewed to replace unlike one in the previous model.Battery terminal’s get corroded if the battery is not replaced in a timely manner.

    This unit will not run
I purchased my Scotts Wizz in the summer of 2023 and used it 2 times. I removed the batteries for winter and when I attempted to use it this season it would not work. I tried 2 sets of new batteries but it still will not run. I am not happy with the unit.

We apologize for the problem that you experienced with your Scotts Wizz Spreader. Please go through the troubleshooting steps below: 1. Can you engage the trigger at all or is it locked? Make sure the lock on top of handle is in unlocked (forward) position. 2. If you have not used the Scotts Wizz Spreader in a while, try manually spinning the rotary plate (green plate that spins to throw out product) then engage the trigger to see if the spreader will turn on. If the rotary plate will not turn at all then check if there is something jamming it or the agitator which is the small spinning part inside the hopper. 3. There is a felt washer located underneath the agitator in the hopper that should be soft. If it has dried out, we recommend spraying it with a lubricating spray like WD40. While spraying spin the agitator by hand to loosen it. 4. Check the Rotor Plate position. There should be a gap between the orange edgeguard part that is directly under the hopper and the top of the cylinder portion of the green rotor plate. The bottom of the cylinder portion should be resting on the black washer like piece. Use a screwdriver to push the rotor plate down and make sure the center cylinder portion of rotor plate rests on the bottom of the spreader. Just lay the screwdriver across the rotor plate and push down. 5. Make sure the orange edgeguard is not dislocated and can rotate freely. If you have additional questions please reach out to our Consumer Services team at 888-270-3714.
      Poor Design
The chute that controls the flow of product to the spinning wheel fails to completely close. When you remove your finger from the trigger, some product keeps flowing into the spinner which then causes more product than intended to spread when you start up again. This is more of an issue with finer products as they seem to clog the guides. Also the pre- installed batteries last all of 5 minutes and had to be replaced. There’s no sense in including them from the factory.

Contents need help to enter the hooper
We used the Scott wiz spreader for the first time. I found that the contents in the spreader does not move down into the hooper without help. It would be nice if Scott’s provided a cleaning video. As this spreader is electronic, I am concerned about cleaning the spreader.

            Poor quality product
I bought this spreader a year ago. Took out the batteries at the end of the season, now this season it won't work. I went and bought brand new lithium batteries and I tried it with no product in the hopper and thought I pulled the trigger and it seemed to work. As soon as I put product in the hopper, it no longer works. This is a very disappointing product for the price.

This spreader is perfect for applying around obstacles that my regular spreader is not good around. It's also great for seeding.

My Wizz Spreader is an absolute blessing! Do to a heart condition it was very hard for me to push my old spreader. The Wizz Spreader is so easy to hold….even with it being full. So now I can just set it and walk at my own pace. It meets all my expectations and more.

                  Disappointing.
I bought it last year and used it once. I thought it was a cool idea since I am downsized to a smaller home and yard.

                    Terrible - Do Not Buy
Bought last year and it worked well. This year I installed new batteries and motor worked fine without fertilizer. Then I used it with fertilizer. With the fertilizer the motor was very slow or stopped totally. Tried another set of batteries with same result. Waste of money!

                      Failure after one season
I used mine once last summer with Scott’s weed n feed. . I went to use it this spring and it won’t spin or make a sound. I changed the batteries and still got nothing. It was stored in a dry shop.

                        Not Powerful Enough
I've had this Wizz Spreader for several years now. From the very beginning, it has not been that powerful. And over the years it has become even less so. I'm thinking the motor is weak because it runs on AA batteries. They need to make a more powerful model that runs on a lithium-ion rechargeable battery with a more powerful motor. The other problem I have with it is if I don't hold the spreader in the proper position, the seeds stop feeding into the hopper. They just stay on the sides unless I shake it or point it down. I came to the website today looking for a hand-crank-operated spreader, but they are out of stock. I still have my very old (30+ years?) walk-behind spreader I can use. But it only covers about a 24-inch wide area. I was looking for a wider-coverage spreader for my 1-acre yard. Otherwise, I'll be getting a lot of exercise! I have had other Scotts products that I have been very pleased with. Unfortunately, this is not one of them.

Cheap construction and not powerful enough
Worked OK at first but then started struggling. The motor in this thing isn't powerful enough. Don't waste your money on this.
