Can this spreader be used with bagged salt, or will it just work with a much smaller crystal, like ice melt?

Asked by: wanttousemybaggedsalt
I used solar salt for my clients. (water softener salt) which has mostly smaller granules up to 1/4 inch but some up to 1 inch. The larger opening on a setting of 10 works great for the larger materials. However the smaller stuff like Ice Melt or rock salt has what are call "fines" which will spread but can clog if wet or damp.

can you spread lime (for the lawn) with this?

Asked by: patti
As long as the lime or fertilizer is granular, yes you can spread it with this spreader. The flow control plate on my unit closes almost all the way, but no amount of adjustments will get it entirely closed. The remaining gap is small enough that granules will not pass through, but it would probably leak a bit for powdered lime.

I assembled it in about 1 hour 15 mins. Overall I am happy with the spreader and seems to be strong and well thought out. One exception is the plastic caps that hold the wheels on. These caps are fine for somethings but not for this heavy duty unit. A 130lb hopper is meant for larger yards and when you take into account hills, bumps and slopes in my property, I just don't see the caps holding up long. I did end up drilling a 7/32 hole on each axle and installed an extra 3/4" x 1 1/4 inch washer along with a 1/8" x 2 9/16" hitch pin. You could also use a 3/16 cotter pin if you prefer but the hitch pin makes it easy to remove wheel if need to grease or service. Spent $3 in washers and hitch pins at local hardware store and well worth it.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Handled the job well I purchased this spreader for use on our 2 acre property. Our land is very bumpy, so I knew I needed pneumatic tires. I also did not want to have to refill the hopper every other minute. This spreader fulfilled all of our expectations! Worked very well and we spread 200lbs of organic fertilizer in 30 minutes or so. Prior to purchase I read online reviews stating the installation instructions were not adequate, I found them to be just fine. I did pull up the U-Tube videos to go along with the quick guide, I had no problems assembling this spreader. Hopfully this spreader will last a really long time for the price!

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Right Spreader for the Job Spreader is well made and works great, and was my right choice, assembly of this spreader requires more knowledge than a beginner level due to some tight fitting parts; however overall the spreader is above average. If considering this spreader I would suggest you purchase the hopper cover - due to the hopper size light winds could have the product you are spreading blowing at you

Rated 5 out of 5 by from 103 Lb Tow Spreder Spreader works great. Instructions were fairly clear with the exception of which way to put in the agitator clip. I had it backwards at first, but was an easy fix. Other than that, the directions for assembly were clear. Quality of unit was good. Used it last weekend and the grass is already turning green. I'd recommend this product.

Poor Quality - first off this thing is a pain to put together with roughly 100 pieces of hardware. Really? Second you need to study the orientation of the parts in the images as they don't give you any description or other visual ques. I could get past this but lets get to the quality. The lever setting is way off. Its fully open at 2 when it should be fully open at 10. I believe the holes in the handles are drilled in the wrong location which is causing the issue. Next the gearbox is slipping and grinding out of the box. I checked to see if it was lubricated properly and it is. The problem is that the flywheel is sloppy allowing it to slip. I don't see anyway to make an adjustment. Now I likely have to wait for a new gearbox and disassemble quite a few parts. Not to mention the wheels are held on by those cheap slip nuts with the teeth. They are extremely difficult to get off and will need new ones as well. I just wish I could return this joke of product.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from I bought this a couple of weeks ago. Works fantastic. Glad to see Agri-Fab included an extra section included with the owners manual for assembling the spreader. This extra section included words to go along with the pictures, made putting it together really easy. Had it together in a little over an hour.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from The spreader works great on my one acre lot.... The spreader works great on my one acre lot. Assembly took about 20 min. The flow control lever assembly had some paint flaws and I had to reposition the number scale tape. The gears were not lubricated from the factory, so you will need to remove the cover (no tools needed) and apply some grease.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Sturdy Spreader I bought this spreader after doing comparisons of different manufacturers spreaders. It took me an hour and a half to assemble it because the instructions were somewhat vague. I also took note of the past reviews that said one of the main problems was the retaining cap would come off holding the non-drive wheel on. So, during my assembly I modified the axle. I installed the washers, spacer bushing and the wheel. I added a thin washer on the outside of the wheel. Then added 1/8 inch clearance and drilled a 5/32 inch cross hole through the axle. I installed a 5/32 inch roll pin through the axle to retain the wheel. You can drill multiple size holes depending on your retaining method. I could have installed a cotter pin or a spring pin but chose to install a roll pin to retain the wheel. It took me about 20 minutes to modify the axle to make sure the wheel never comes off. Too bad the factory doesn't do the same thing. Even with the roll pin added the retaining cap can still be installed.
