Questions & Answers

Can I install this PEX B tubing with Milwaukee Expansion tool?

Can I install this PEX B tubing with Milwaukee Expansion tool?
Asked by: di
You need pex-a which is more flexible and does have faster memory. The letter designations are for the manufacturing processes for pex. Each letter stands for that process. Pex-a is well suited for the expansion systems. Pex-b is more rigid and commonly used with crimp or cinch ring systems.

Can this be used out side for yard Spickets and sprinkler systems if our winters run -20 —40 below ?

Asked by: Nana
First answer is yes with caveats. It will sustain freeze/thaw cycles, even with water in the pipe, though it will eventually tear: from wikipedia: Less likely to burst from freezing. The general position is that PEX plastic materials are slower to burst than copper or PVC pipes, but that they will burst eventually since freezing causes water to expand.[19] One account suggested that PEX water-filled pipes, frozen over time, will swell and tear; in contrast, copper pipe "rips" and PVC "shatters".[20] Home expert Steve Maxwell suggested in 2007 that PEX water-filled pipes could endure "five or six freeze-thaw cycles without splitting" while copper would split apart promptly on the first freeze.[21] In new unheated seasonal homes, it is still recommended to drain pipes during an unheated cold season or take other measures to prevent pipes from bursting because of the cold. In new construction, it is recommended that all water pipes be sloped slightly to permit drainage, if necessary.[21] As with most irrigation lines, supply a drainage valve and a way to blow them out before the freeze cycle begins. With that being said, the pipe (pex-a) being the most flexible, will go through several freeze/thaw cycles without bursting, just don't make a habit of it. Iron pipe with definitely freeze and retain that cold temperature longer but typically is tough enough not to break.

The old pipe was corroded inside and made the water flow very slow. Guess it happens after being in use after 70 yrs. I hope to get that much use out of this one. Will be getting the straight Pex to run water through out the rest of the house.

Being one who prefers copper pipe, making the decision to use pex to replace the rusted out main water supply line from the meter to the house did not come easy. The advice to use pex came from virtually everyone I consulted, so I reasoned why not? Am I glad now I took the advice and went with the pex? Unequivocally yes. It went in fast and easy. No soldering, shark bite connectors and the flexibility of the pex made the installation a snap.
