[This review was collected as part of a promotion.] Perfect mid size hammer drill. This will handle 90 percent of tasks that the majority of users will face. It has just slightly less power than dewalts XR Hammer drill but still competes with it, and makes up for that with its compacts size and light weight. It’s durable like the rest of dewalts drills I have used, and I would definitely Reccomend it for professionals and homeowners alike.

[This review was collected as part of a promotion.] Arrived just in time for my current project of reframing a cramped basement. I needed to predrill for 8” headLOKs with minimal space in between joists. A coworkers larger DeWalt drill could not fit and the only other option would have been to fuddle with a right angle adapter. The second task was to predrill the foundation for 5” GRKs. Both jobs were accomplished by this hammer drill without hesitation. Also, I’m quite surprised at the noise reduction compared to older models. Another welcome addition to the DeWalt family. However, I have nothing nice to say about the 1.5Ah batteries. They are great for my 20v finish/brad nailers and a flashlight, not for drilling concrete. You’d be better off buying the bare tool and a 3Ah battery.

[This review was collected as part of a promotion.] I just recieved this and used it for the first project. I had to drill several holes in masonry, and this out performed me. The constant and consistent hammer function made drilling the holes easy, no lag with build up of material. It it very light weight compared to other hammer drills I have used which comes in handy when drilling multiple holes, as it reduces fatigue.

This is my new favorite drill. Sorry 15 year old dependable DeWalt drill, you've been dethroned by the new guy. When DeWalt came out with the 20 Volt line of power tools I was a little perturbed. Did I have to get all new stuff? Was I going to be able to get new 18 volt batteries in a couple of years when the old ones wore out? I've since seen they have an adapter to remedy this. And after using this new drill with the brushless motor I am a believer. I originally bought my DeWalt drill after using one at work and being impressed with its power. It's been a good drill, but now their drills are even better. This one will fit in tighter spaces and it is lighter and the handle feels more ergonomic. Both of the keyless chucks on these drills are a dream to use. Many drills with keyless chucks are a pain requiring you to turn one half one way and vice-versa and the bit still slips. These DeWalt chucks are rock solid for one-handed operation and the bit does NOT slip. How long before DeWalt says,"OK, guys, we're going up to 22 volts. Buy our new stuff". (just kidding) Using DeWalt tools is a pleasure. Once you get one you'll want to get more. I have to mention there is a nice tool bag included and it has plenty of room in it in case you want to bring along your DeWalt saw. And of course a charger and two batteries. They say it is a hammer drill and I was worried it was going to be vibrating like mad when using it, but that isn't happening. The hammer drill function is there if you need it, otherwise it's a smooth operator and an adjustable torque driver.

Cordless drill/drivers are probably my most-used (and abused) tool that I have. After using a couple over many years I am not sure how I was ever able to accomplish anything without one. My most recent tool has been a Ridgid brand and has served me well. Of course there are drawbacks, which has helped me judge the performance of this Dewalt drill to my current one. I have been considering adding a second drill to my toolbox, since often I need to alternatively drill holes then drive screws: having two drills at the same time eliminates the need to constantly change bits and speeds. This drill has a good feel and I think a bit smaller and lighter than my old one. This one operates very smoothly and is quiet. This one has plenty of power, and I think this may be in part due to the 20V battery. Note the batteries charge very quickly, and I appreciate that two were included, since when I'm working on a project I am constantly needing to swap out packs and need the previously depleted pack ready to go. Charing was on the order of an hour or less, so no problem with that. One complaint I have had with my old Ridgid driver was that it did a poor job holding very small drill bits (those less than 3/16 inch or so). They would tend to slip out while being used. As this was a problem, I was sure to test several smaller bits in the Dewalt unit, and this handled it well. I have not really tested the hammer drill feature, but I like that it is integrated into the unit as often I may need to drill a hole or two into masonry and don't want to pull out my SDS-Max hammer drill for the job. I appreciate that this is integrated into the drill, and think it will be good for smaller masonry jobs. Overall, a very good drill and seems very sturdy. I've always had good experiences with Dewalt tools and this one seems like it will not disappoint.

Another great tool from DeWalt. Years ago, my sons got me an 18 volt drill from DeWalt, and for a long time, that was my favorite tool. That has been replaced. These new 20 volt tools are fantastic. They are smaller, lighter, the 20 volt batteries are a lot lighter, and they are just about as powerful. This compact drill gives up nothing on power and speed, and the hammer feature is a big plus. I have a plug-in hammer drill, and this beats that. Good power, easy to adjust clutch, easy to switch to hammer mode - I may have a new favorite tool! Comes with two batteries and a charger.

This review is for the DeWalt model DCD709 compact hammer drill. It’s important when reading reviews to have the correct model number in mind; DeWalt makes a variety of models and they all have different features. The DCD709 comes with a contractor’s bag, a belt hook, two batteries, and a battery charger. The batteries are what I would call “starter” batteries being that they are only 1.5 a/h batteries and lack a ‘fuel gauge’ so there’s no way of easily determining the remaining life in the batteries. If you’re hanging pictures or assembling shelving or some such minor task they’re easily up to the job. However, this is a hammer drill – and 1.5 a/h batteries would not be my first choice when drilling repeatedly into masonry. If you’re looking at assembling a wooden deck or putting up a basement rec room full of sheetrock, I’d plan on buying a more powerful battery or two. YMMV. The drill itself is quite compact and has a great ‘feel’ to the grip. The included LED light falls exactly on the work. With a battery installed the drill has good balance, and the fit/finish is top notch. The chuck, however, is not metal – it’s plastic. Pro’s will venture their own views, I’m just a DIY’er, but a plastic chuck and the included 1.5 a/h batteries lead me to believe that DeWalt is intending this model to be for advanced DIY work and maybe not so much intended for professional trades. Looking at the drill in that light, it’s very nice indeed. It has a two-speed transmission, variable speed trigger, and a brushless motor. I’ve been upgrading our garden borders, using 2x4’s connected together with stainless steel brackets and supported by 2x4 stakes driven into the ground. The stakes are secured to the 2x4 borders using bolt/nuts, requiring a hole to be drilled through the border and the stake at the same time. Using a black oxide drill bit (one that’s designed for “general” purposes) the DeWalt DCD709 had no problems in getting through the combined lumber. No undue force was required, the drill simply performed the job as I wanted it to. Using a hex bit I installed wood screws to mount the stainless steel brackets and the clutch on the DeWalt worked to perfection; I didn’t strip out one single screw. The 1.5 a/h battery was up to the job in this application; it didn’t run hot nor did it run out of juice. The drill was very comfortable to hold, I really like the grip that DeWalt has engineered. The compactness of the drill aided in getting (literally) close to the ground when drilling into the borders/stakes and installing the wood screws. The drill has a 3-year warranty against defects, 2 years on the batteries. DeWalt also offers “1 Year Free Service” – any part that wears out within 12 months will be replaced for free. The Home Depot includes a 90-day return policy as well. Overall – a very nice compact hammer drill for homeowners/DIY’ers. HTH Regards, Jim
