How much base sand should go ontop of the earth lock min. And max ?

Asked by: Tim
Not sure of the min/max dimensions, it will depend on what type of ground you are laying. You can google geogrid earthlock and check out some of the videos.

Just my opinion and not from direct experience but I'm not sure how long it'd work. You might have initial success/benefit, but walking on the much would likely break it down enough to allow it to filter through the openings. The mat itself would still spread the load and reduce sinking/footprints.

Another question: Would this product work under a 2" layer of crushed rock (1/4" minus, so small) and a 1.5-2" layer of pea gravel (3/8") over the rock? It's in our backyard where our dog runs, fetches, chases and wrestles other dogs. So looking for something to help the pea gravel stay in place. If not this product, any other suggestions? Thanks!
Asked by: Jen
I don't see whatnot, if the grade is not steep. It distributes the load and 2" gravel layer should be enough to protect the grid and keep it in place

Asked by: Jen
No but they should sell smaller sizes. This is a huge heavy monster roll from a residential use perspective.

Our problem was clay soil in high-traffic north-facing area of the horse paddock. After mixing barn lime into the mud and drying out the area as much as possible, I rolled out the GeoGrid up-side down as suggested by other reviewers to keep the ends from re-rolling, then covered it with several inches of 1” minus crushed rock. The result has been significant improvement in soil stability in spite of continuing spring rains and the best (worst) efforts of our horses. Ten days later I continue to add gravel as necessary where the gravel fines have sunk into the mud below and where the horses’ shuffling feet have uncovered GeoGrid but I need to do less and less each day. One word of advice: wear long sleeves while rolling out the product especially if working by yourself. The cut edge can scratch. By the time I finished, my forearm looked like my cat “got” me.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Absolutely essential for use in unstable land I am building a new house but it is next to a small marshy piece of land. The area at one side of the property was the worst. Even in relative dry weather last summer, the ground would sink several inches when walking on it. After laying this TriAx GeoGrid and topping it with approx 10 inches of top soil, the resulting effect was truly astounding. Even after heavy rain it will sink perhaps half an inch, a quarter of what it used to do before using the Geogrid when walking on it and when the earth is dry walking on it producing no sinking whatsoever. During this Fall I had numerous heavy vehicles coming down my gravel driveway and a stretch of 20 feet I was constantly having to fill in due to sinking problem. Now considering myself an `expert` (not) I dug out the bad area, laid some more Geogrid (two strips 30 feet X 12 feet) and re-laid it with soil and gravel. After two weeks, the heavy trucks had compacted the ground and only leave their tire trace and not once has the area shown any sign of breaking down, see attached photos. I highly recommend this for anyone who has an issue with either sinking or moving as in a sloping area. An excellent remedy for fixing unstable land.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Easily add a driveway in almost any soil type and/or use to un-stick your car/truck 72 in x 60 ft EarthLock TriAx GeoGrid Black Polypropylene Stabilization Underlayment I added a picture of our drive two months after I spread gravel WITHOUT GeoGrid. You can still see some of the gravel but not a lot. All we have is soft sticky black mud. GeoGrid's claim is that on soft ground, it works like a snowshoe to distribute the load. And that is exactly what it does. I leveled my drive one more time and rolled out the GeoGrid. It was so easy my granddaughter rolled out the GeoGrid. We found the best way to keep it from rolling back up was to flip it over. I was surprised how easy it was to cut with just a pair of scissors. We will be adding a layer of gravel on top of GeoGrid but I thought you won't be able to see the GeoGrid if I did. I kept two 2 foot strips off the roll to use as traction grids when we get stuck in the yard. Or you can roll it up and put it in your car/truck in case you get stuck. Just shove the EarthLock GeoGrid under the tire and drive out. I haven't tried it on ice or snow but it is worth a shot. Minutiae: 100% UV resistant Will not rust, leach or degrade in direct sunlight

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Worth its weight in gold! I will say right away that I didn't use this for its intended use. I used it for mud management in heavy traffic areas of my horse pastures. We live in the pacific northwest where horses and our amount of rain equates to frustrating amounts of mud. Someone had recommended a similar product, but it was crazy expensive! I decided to give this a try instead. After scraping the mud away to hardpan soil I laid the GeoGrid down in areas our horses make the most mud and dumped 5\8s minus gravel on top - about 10 inches deep. Its been installed for about two weeks and I haven't seen any gravel drifting. Which is nothing short of a miracle! I highly recommend.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great underlayment product We have been cutting firewood from blow downs from recent wind storms. We dozed a path back to the trees but encountered a very soft spot in the road. We dumped a load of gravel over the spot but this was an act of futility as we ended up with a truck stuck axle deep in mud. I had seen the Geo Grid stabilization underlayment and got it to try. It is a gridded polypropylene material that lays down like a mat. We cut the 60 ft. roll in half and covered the soft area with a bit of an overlap in the middle. We then dumped another load of gravel over the mat and leveled out the surface. So far it has held up to four truck loads of firewood to be hauled over it with no problem. I was really surprised how well this works and would recommend it to anyone needing to cross ground that is otherwise too soft to hold up the weight of equipment or vehicles.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from good stuff Was putting in a large crushed concete driveway, on a sloped surface with a clay base. Bought this stuff and instructed my contractor to put it down. He had never seen or used it before, but he put it down and he is a believer. Took less materials, packed tighter and level, and is very stable (we have had huge rains since then that have not touched it). He asked me to send him the info on it so he could recommend it moving forward. I should get a royalty! Well worth the money, more than pays for itself and delivers a permanent solution. Going to use it on repair projects in our small community.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Stabilizes rock/gravel path. I made an error and dug a path and poured pea gravel. The path is very unstable and hard to walk on. I bought this and (after double work) placed this on the leveled ground and put the gravel back in place. path is much more stable. I am going to use it as part of the base for a patio as well.
