Can I fix a bench vise to the top?

Can I fix a bench vise to the top?
Asked by: SVK289
Yes, I have attached a 6" Wilton Bench Vise to my tabletop (same table) on the right front corner. Be sure to use a drill guide to be sure the mounting holes are perfectly streight. Additionally, also position your vise above the center of the leg to increase stability and so no alteration of the table is needed. Just drill, and mount. I used diamond plate under the vise (to protect the wood) before mounting. I have 120 degrees of vise movement, and it is perfect. Hope this helps!

The hardwood top says it can only support 80 pounds, that seems really like to me. Is that a typo?

Asked by: Trent
The table top alone must weigh more than 100 lbs. Please be aware that the 8' workbench weighs 200 lbs (OK, more like 193) in the box. It's not an easy haul.

Customer Reviews

6 ft. Hardwood Top Adjustable Height Workbench in Hammered Granite is rated 4.7 out of 5 by 751.
Rated 2 out of 5 by from Have to return I almost never leave reviews but the quality of this particular workbench has really let me down. After carrying this upstairs and opening the box I noticed an odd looking streak in the surface of the bench. I didn't think much of it until after I set up the bench. The streak appeared to be a wood filler that one would use to fill gaps in joints used on the surface of the maple top to fill in a crack or gash in the wood. Sure enough, after just a week the filler started cracking and if I tried ( I didn't) I could easily just scrape the rest out with a fingernail. I posted a picture where you can see the crack and in the middle the filler has flaked out. I had not even used the bench at all and I already had a nice size crack in it. Also, there is 6 inch section of maple that had the wood filler in it too. Not too big of a deal on the later but I expected something better for $600. I called Gladiator and they said they couldn't help me. So it goes back to Home Depot. I will try another though.

It is solidly built and the adjustable height feature has provided welcomed relief from back strain. I set mine at 39". Adjusting height after initial assembly would not be an easy operation, though. The wood top has a nice finish and the individual hardwood pieces are glued together with no gaps or cracks. The levelers at the bottom of each leg are really helpful. There is absolutely no bounce or wiggle to this workbench. It's simply a well designed piece of equipment that I am glad to have in my work area. I picked up the workbench at HD. I unpacked it there and checked all parts to make sure everything looked good... this thing is heavy....wouldn't want to have to return it! It fit in my X3 with the back seat down, and I was able to unload it piece by piece and assemble with no assistance, but I would recommend having some help.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Great Table - With Warnings After seeing reviews that suggested this item might arrive damaged, I had it delivered to my nearest HD store so I could inspect it first. I am glad I did. The first two tables arrived at the store damaged. Before reordering the table a third time, store personnel picked the good parts from the two damaged tables to make me one good one....or so I thought. After taking the table to my shop, I opened it to find the table top damaged in two small places, both of which exposed rough wood to the front edge of the table top. Here's the problem. The bamboo top is so hard, it's extremely difficult to sand the dings smooth. And I need to do that so workers here will not get splinters. Check your item closely for dings, especially the table top. And know it will not be easy to sand those dings smooth. The dings on my table top are still not smooth. Otherwise the table is top notch. It is very sturdy even with the adjustable nature of the legs. And it is nice and heavy, just right for attaching a vise for serious work.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from A solid, heavy and heavy duty workbench This workbench is not fancy - no drawers, no storage, no moving parts other than the adjustable height legs. It is simply a solid, heavy duty work surface. The top is 1-3/4" thick, made of solid hardwood. The legs are tubular steel and adjustable, with leveling feet. It was fairly easy to assemble, and only took about 20 minutes. The weight of the bench is the largest concern. Moving it requires either plenty of strength or two people. Even the legs are heavy to move around. That weight just equals strength and stability - both good for a workbench. I added a shelf between the cross braces of the legs, made out of plywood. It works well and gives me some additional storage space below the bench. I really like the bench and can see it lasting forever. The leveling feet are a nice touch. My garage slopes (as do most), and the leveling feet resolved that without me having to shim it. I like that a lot. The only thing I would like to see is some kind of shelving or drawers under the top. The space is there, and it would make it a much more functional workspace.

The individually adjustable feet were a necessity due to the uneven floor of my garage. I needed to maximize the space in my garage so I bought this Gladiator 6ft. adjustable height static workbench that I could set high enough to roll a different brand 52 in. wide mobile workbench under. One of the hex head shaped cutouts in the adjustable legs that are supposed to hold the bolt head in place was misshapen so the bolt spins freely when trying to tighten it completely. But that is not hard to get past. One end of the cardboard box had become unglued and opened by the time it was delivered but there was no damage to the workbench.

It's doable to put together yourself and upright with care. I used cheap dollies to get it where I needed it in my garage. I've researched others and with the Home depot sale price it made my choice a little easier. There are comparable workbenches out there for a little less money (e.g., less weight carrying capability, wood not as thick/stout, etc.) but you also get less - so you weigh what you need/want IMO.

This Gladiator Workbench makes a Perfect Home Office Computer Station with a regular desk for doing daily paper work. These Workbenches are easy to assembly and very stable compared to most Computer Work Stations we looked at. We like the feature of adjustable legs. We did add a Keyboard Tray and a Pencil Drawer to finish out the office arrangement . The Gladiator Power Strip resolved the Tangled Cord Problem Associated with Computers. You will also notice The Internet Router and TV Box sits nicely on the shelf (we found on the web) . We are very pleased that Home Depot delivered these workbenches in a timely manner during the Christmas Time frame . This lay out really enhances our home based business and makes doing daily work very easy. I assembled these the same day they arrived (EARLY) and was up and running the business the next day . Ordered December 13 , Delivered on December 18, 2016

This bench looks spectacular in my maple cabinet kitchen but there are some idiot things. 1. The bench is packed with the good side to the outside bottom of the box. Duh!! I was lucky there were only a few minor mars in the good surface. The corners are fairly well protected. I would NOT have this delivered to my home: too likely to get messed up and too hard to return. 2. As in many businesses, the least talented worker gets the job of installing the most conspicuous part. The "Gladiator" label is so crooked it's a joke. Duh!! Ever see an otherwise nice house with outlets and switches stuck at random heights? Same thing happens: least skilled does the most conspicuous work. 3. For serious use as a bench, it can help a lot if there is usable overhang all around. This thing barely has it on the ends (give us another half inch!!) and doesn't have it on one long side (buddy can you spare an inch?). They could have put the bracing panel to the inside. Duh!! Still in all, I am delighted. The top is a beauty (though I think the bottom knotty side is cooler, wish I'd had a choice, but it was pre drilled). It is very rigid/sturdy with just enough flex to settle nicely on a slightly uneven floor. Adjusting the legs after assembly and set up is pretty easy: support the crossbar on one end with a strong box or stool, change the bolts, remove the support, do the other end. Pay attention: this bench is HEAVY!! If you can't move a refrigerator alone, you might have trouble with this bench.
