when this pump cycles does it discharge all the fluid in the system out of the pipes. My pump is in the basement and it has to pump up 6' so I'm concerned with septic pipes freezing in the winter after I shut down the camp.
Asked by: Roz
No it does not and come to think about it I don;t know any that do. Sewage pumps pump liquids and some assorted solids but they do not pump air. So you never want air in the system. It will simply compress and absorb the pumps energy and there will be no flow, As a result you adjust he floats so that the intakes at the bottom are always under water. You only clear the waste water above. Second the pump pushes the waste through the check valve that keeps the water column from running backwards. The pump pushes the water into the pipe advancing the water that was pumped earlier. Depending on the pipe size and length it may take a couple of pump cycles before the waste reaches its destination. Bottom line is the pipes need to be below frost line or they will freeze and crack. Now for seasonal applications you could winterize the lines by way of non toxic antifreeze. But if it were me i would just dig deeper if possible.
