extremely cold temperatures how do these hold up

Asked by: Deerslayer
I have used two of these bulbs in an unheated detached garage for about a year with excellent performance. Some brands flicker in cold temperatures, but I haven't noticed problems with these bulbs.

Can these bulbs be used in a fully enclosed fixture? The "ecosmart" bulbs box says "not for use in a fully enclosed fixtures".
Asked by: John
It depends... The issue of a bulb in an enclosed fixture is one of heat. The base of most LED bulbs can get quite warm. Inside many of them are "heat syncs" designed to dissipate that heat. Enclosing a bulb reduces heat dissipation, increasing its temperature. Heat damages electrical components, but some components are more susceptible to heat than others. Also, as LED technology has matured, some components don't get as hot as similar ones used in the past. As you might expect, components which don't get as warm and/or which can withstand more heat tend to be more expensive. But there is no way for you to know the quality of components inside a particular bulb. Many manufacturers don't keep track of this information either. So buying a new bulb, or one from a particular manufacturer, is no guarantee that it's made with more modern components designed for use in an enclosed fixture. There are also the issues of warranty and reputation. Manufacturers don't want to replace bulbs which burn out prematurely because they got too hot. Even disregarding the issue of warranty, manufacturers don't want to get a reputation for making crummy products. As LED bulb life is directly impacted by temperature, it behooves both you and the manufacturers to minimize the heat in enclosed fixtures, so the bulbs stay cooler and last longer, as they were intended. In conclusion, enclosed fixtures are rarely designed to house bright bulbs. Putting a high wattage incandescent bulb into an enclosed fixture is a fire hazard, so manufacturers typically designed such fixtures to use lower wattage bulbs. They also warned consumers not to use higher wattage bulbs in such fixtures. So, as enclosed fixtures are commonly found in areas not intended to be brightly lit, it's best to respect the original design intentions. Find other ways of brightly lighting areas, rather than putting bright lights into enclosed fixtures not designed to have them in the first place.

100-Watt Equivalent A19 Non-Dimmable Energy Saving LED Light Bulb Daylight (5000K) (8-Pack) is rated 4.5 out of 5 by 1234.
Rated 5 out of 5 by from So much better than the old 60W incandescent I have a closet (house was built in 1962) that had a simple, stringpull porcelain lamp holder that would accept any "A" base luminaire/bulb. I already had a replacement lamp holder with a new string pull, but over the last few months I've decided to replace all my incandescents with LEDs as the incandescents burn out. As most incandescent bulb sockets are only rated for 60W, you simply look for an LED with the same socket that uses less than (or equal to) the rating of the fixture. Instead of the 60W illumination I'd been used to, this 15W LED gives off the equivalent of a 100W incandescent! It will take this new bulb 4 hours to use the same Kwh as the 60W incandescent in 1 hour. And the incandescent will last maybe 6 months while the LED will last at least 10 years (the advertising says over 20 years)! What's not to like? 25% the operating cost and at age 64, I may never replace this lamp again! And all for under $10.

Faulty bulbs and poor customer support. I purchased a number of these bulbs last year to use in light fixtures in my home where I needed more light than a 60w equivalent would provide. Two of the bulbs have stopped working, only flickering to life every once in a while. I contacted Philips via the warranty claim form as they bulbs have a three year warranty and received a prompt reply indicating that my scanned receipt did not go through and asking me to resend it, along with a photo of the bulbs and asking a few questions. I sent that all back within an hour by reply email as requested and that was now two weeks ago without any further contact from Philips. I have contacted them twice since then to ascertain the status, but have received no response. Of all the LED bulbs I have purchased in the past several years (Sylvania, Philips, Feit, GE, Utilitech, Great Value and EcoSmart), the Philips are the only ones to have failed so far and their warranty support is terrible. I will avoid Philips products from now on.

This bulb is actually slightly smaller than a typical 100W incandescent bulb with is a good thing. When you walk down the hallway towards a room using these bulbs with the lights on and the door open, the light spilling out into the hallway looks like sunlight coming in through the window, often making you forget that the sun went down a couple hours ago. These are great because you reduce your cost of lighting while reducing your cooling costs (these lights run cold, if you have a big family resulting in 100W incandescent bulbs on in 5 rooms at the same time they'd actually put out enough heat that on a 70° F evening, your AC would kick on to cool your house just from the heat of the lights). Before cost effective LEDs I always filled my house with 60W incandescent bulbs that didn't make me happy with the amount of light but I wasn't willing to pay for the electricity. Now with these bulbs I get better light than an incandescent could ever do while saving a ton of money.
