can you cut door down 5" front bottom?

Asked by BuffyX June 10, 2019

We do not recommend trimming or altering the bifold doors. This would weaken the joints and would also void the warranty.

The Colonial bifold door glass is frosted with a clear grille pattern. The doors do not have a grille on top of the glass.

You probably could take some off the bottom.

The Colonial bifold glass is one single piece. The measurement of the glass seen in the 32"wx80"h bifold door is 10-1/4"w X 66 1/2"h.

Yes, there is a video on YouTube and also on the LTL Home Products website. There is also a PFD file on the Home Depot product webpage.

The glass is installed into the frame with no visible clips on either side. The back side is completely smooth; the front side appears to have a slight texture; I believe the "opaque glass" is actually a film applied in rectangles to the front. The appearance is beautiful on both sides.

Someone asked in here the minimum rough opening for a 36 inch width door... what is it for the 30 inch door?

Asked by Don September 8, 2018

Answers

I would not go less than a 30" rough opening for the 30" door. It is made to fit. Anything less would mean that the door would have to be cut. Not good.

What color is the hardware? Can it be changed out? I need it to be silver-toned.

Our doors came with brass hinges installed and a wood knob. We purchased satin nickel hardware separately to swap out. We did not use the bifold track and mounting hardware, so I didn't pay attention to those finishes.

The photos show a white door. Can you also order in prefinished white?

Asked by Thor July 16, 2018

Answer

Home Depot does not offer the prefinished white.

The doors are sturdy and very attractive. They also came incredibly well packed. They were very easy to paint because of the removable film on the glass. A previous reviewer mentioned converting these into French rather than bifold doors. That was why we chose these doors. We did the same, using magnet latches at the top to ensure a consistent close. It has worked perfectly and we are very pleased with the result.

We discarded the bifold track and hardware and modified 2 sets of 30x80 bifold doors to make folding French doors to replace sliding mirror closet doors in a 59 x 80 opening. We did not have room for pocket doors, and didn't want full width regular French doors swinging into the closet; no room to swing out either. This enables us to close the closet off entirely, or leave the two outer panels in place like sidelights and fold the two inner panels back to leave an ~ 30 opening. Or we can fold it all back as shown in photos. We hung the panels with additional 4 non-mortise hinges on both of the two outermost panels to determine the amount to trim, then removed all the hinges. We trimmed about 1/4 on the two innermost faces with a table saw, drilled a hole for the two knobs, sanded, primed, sanded and painted. We reinstalled all the hinges and rehung the doors. (Full disclosure: in the Questions area a response says that trimming the doors will void the warranty.) Found by trial and error that magnetic catches were not adequate to hold the doors in place. We installed a 2-1/2 flush bolt vertically on the top middle area of the back side of the outer panels to allow them to be fixed or opened. We removed the inner panels, installed ball catches into the tops, and reinstalled them. (It's possible we could have used 4 ball catches instead of 2 bolts and 2 catches). Corresponding strike plates were installed in the upper door frame. A piece of trim was added to the top of the frame in front of the doors to mask the small gap at the top for the doors to move freely and allow installation of the strike plates. The project took most of a weekend, but that including dry time for the primer and paint. We're very pleased with the result.

First of all my order came in early so kudos to Home Depot and Pinecroft. The door was packed in a very sturdy box and padded very well with Styrofoam and not one bit of damage from shipping. After removing the door we prepared to paint it and realized that the glass panels were sealed in two layers of plastic so there is no need to mask the glass prior to painting. After painting we just used a razor knife to remove the plastic and the paint edges around the glass were perfect. After studying the instructions a few minutes and laying out the parts (no missing parts by the way) the installation went extremely easy. Having never hung a bi-fold door before I was a little apprehensive but the door fit perfectly and we got it hung without any problems. Overall my impression is that it is a well made door and well designed. If I had any criticism, it would be that I wish that the drawing in the instructions was larger. Even with that, 5 stars.

Good solid door. I bought it to fit in existing space, but ended up replacing the track sent with the door (worked very well). Directions to install are horrible, so if you don't have experience with bifold doors, plan on getting help or watching some YouTube videos.

This is a really well built door. The wood grain is also very nice. Unfortunately I had to paint it white to match the other doors in the hallway. The frosted glass also looks really good as well. The directions and parts that came with it were easy to install. I've also found that Homedepot also has a great video selection on how to install bi-fold doors as well as other products I used in the past. The pictures attached below show how I retrofitted a standard door way and installed the bifold door to look like there was never another door in it.

The hinges are on the wrong side of the door. When the door is open, the hinge is fully visible rather than hidden on the inside. I had to paint the hinges (UGH!) to try to hide them, but this is the only thing I don't like about this door.
